Dorothy Davies King passed away peacefully on September 23, 2013 at Hospice North Central Ohio. She had been there for several months dealing with the effects of old age and numerous health issues. We never thought this day would come as Mother always said she was Peter Pan and would never get old. It is comforting to look back and realize what an amazing, long, eventful and full life she had lived. Dorothy loved entertaining and travel. Her treasures of gifts and mementos of the events in her life filled all of the rooms in her home.
Dorothy was born in Ellerby, near Kingston-Upon-Hull in Yorkshire, England. She had a happy childhood with six brothers and sisters. Dorothy loved her English background and kept close ties with her family. She met the dashing Army Captain during the war and was married to Bill King in New York in 1948. They lived for many years in Rochester, New York. She moved to Ashland, Ohio in 2001 and made some wonderful friends. But she always missed her life and friends in Rochester and her home at 331 Hemingway Drive.
Dorothy was dedicated to her driving with Medical Motor Service. She was an active volunteer with many organizations including the English Speaking Union, Retired Army Officers Association and a long time member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Rochester. Dorothy will always be remembered for her amazing memory of events going back for years. She had so many dedicated friends going back fifty, sixty, seventy years and longer. She will be missed by so many. She never forgot birthdays and always remembered something special about everyone.
Dorothy is survived by Dr. Adrian King & family of Ashland, Ohio and Beverley Varcoe & family of Toronto, ON, Canada, her sister in England, brother in Australia, nieces & nephews, four grandchildren & their families, a great-grandson, a great-granddaughter and a step-great granddaughter and many treasured friends.
Dorothy’s Episcopalian funeral will be at Arlington Cemetery, Washington D.C. where she will be interned with her husband, Lt. Col. William N. King. Bill passed away in 2003. It will be a private family service in a few months when we can gather the family from far and wide. Bill was dedicated to the US Army and Mother found peace with her decision to have the final resting place for them on the lovely grounds of this historical cemetery.
Dorothy was also a member of St. Mathew’s Episcopal Church, 1515 Mifflin Ave, Ashland, Ohio, USA, 44805. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mathew’s Church or Hospice North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, OH, USA 44805. The clergy and congregation have been very kind to Dorothy. We also appreciate the help and support from Dorothy’s home helper, Diana Crossen and the dedicated staff at hospice.
