Gary William Henson, 69, a good and kindly man, died of lung cancer surrounded by his family on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. He was born at home like most farm children at the time, on October 3, 1948 to Bennie D. and Virginia Evelyn (Mayes) Henson of rural Tiro, Ohio.
Gary started school at Attica Local School, Attica, Ohio and graduated from Bucyrus High School with the Class of 1966. Gary worked at Kroger's and other places in Columbus, Ohio for several years before moving to Mansfield where he worked at Therm-O-Disc for twenty-nine years maintaining a perfect no absences and no tardies record.
Gary was a dedicated member of the AA community for many years. He helped a great number of people through some very difficult situations. Generous almost to a fault, he was a helper and a giver by nature and practice.
Never married, Gary was very close to his large and ever growing family. He is survived by three sisters, Dorothy May MacGowan (Robert) of Mansfield, Sharon Rose Lookabaugh (Richard) of Mansfield and Jenny Lynn Menke (Mark) of Cleveland, Tennessee; brother, James D. Henson (Joni) of Mansfield; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews upon whom he doted love and affection; and numerous cousins. He also is survived by many friends located from New Jersey to California and was particularly close to the Tommy and Estell Dorris family who came from Tennessee to Ohio with his parents in 1941.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Larry Wayne and Philip Jeffrey "PJ" Henson.
At Gary's request, there will be no calling hours or services. A private gathering for family will be held. Gary will be buried beside his parents and granddad in Crestline, Ohio.
The Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is honored to serve the family.
