Harriett Ann Shellhaas, 95, of Mansfield, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 31, 2019. She was born January 18, 1924, in Mansfield, Ohio, to the late Grady and Flora (Smith) Smotherman.
She graduated from Mansfield Senior High School. Harriett began her career as a secretary at Ohio Brass, then became a full-time homemaker to her wonderful husband and children. Later, she went to work as a secretary for, and retired from, the Ohio State Reformatory. Harriett was quite talented in many areas and made beautiful quilts, knitting and crochet items, and handcrafted sugar Easter eggs - for her family, friends and Sunday school children. She was also a world class pastry chef and joyfully shared her delicious treats. She was always busy with one project or another.
Harriett will be remembered for her wonderful qualities of humility, a servant's heart, benevolence, caring and her desire to help others with no recognition of herself. She was very active her entire life and taught Pioneer Girls and swimming for many years. Harriett was a fierce prayer warrior and made many friends at First Alliance Church where she was an integral part of the congregation. Whether it was teaching 18-36 month old children in Sunday school, sewing bandages to send to Africa, saving stamps for missionaries - as fund raising for various mission groups. She was devoted to serving God to the best of her ability. Harriett was also active in the Senior Group at New Liberty Baptist Church, and her Bible study group at Primrose Retirement Community.
Left to cherish her memory are her four children, Janice (Chip) Gross of Fredericktown, Jim (Sue) Shellhaas of Cleveland, Jon (Nancy) Shellhaas of Pittsburgh, PA, and Jerry (Gwen) Shellhaas of Columbus; seven grandchildren, Andrew (Summer) Gross, Peter (Heather) Gross, Alison (Brendan) Haggerty, Brian Shellhaas, Katelyn (Joe) Chambers, Nathan (Leigha) Shellhaas and Eliana Shellhaas; ten great-grandchildren; her twin sister, Marjorie Smotherman of Mansfield; a sister, Virginia Smotherman of CA; a sister-in-law, Sue Carpenter of Lexington, KY; and many beloved nieces, nephews and treasured family members.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, I. Jack Shellhaas; two sisters, Nellie Johnston and Eudie Schmidt; and a sister-in-law, Sara Kleinschnitz.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Sunday, February 10, 2019, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd. A memorial service will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Larry Hulver officiating. Harriett will be laid to rest beside her husband in Mansfield Memorial Park in a private family service.
