

Howard is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan Cullen Sunnucks; and six children, Brad (Gini) of Mansfield, Jill Rieman of Lexington, Nancy (Tom) Weber of Ontario, Gale (Mike) DeWalt of Powell, Brian (Jean) Sunnucks of Greensboro, NC, and Alex "Chad" (Susan) Sunnucks of Ontario. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, Janet Timmons, Evan DeWalt, Jennifer Gwirtz, Alex Sunnucks Jr., Madeline Hatch, Ashley Chapman, Carol Kissel, Kevin Rieman, Erin Tamburrino, Danielle Howell, Brittany Moize, Jordan Weber, Eve Sunnucks; and his fourteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his older brother, Dave (Pat) Sunnucks; and his youngest sister, Sondra Leitenberger. He was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Jim (wife, Harriet); youngest brother, Mike; twin sister, Joan "Joani" Sowash (husband, Al); brother-in-law, Ken Leitenberger; and dearest friends, Al and Cathy Paetsch of Mansfield.
Howard is a decorated veteran of the Korean War (1952-1953, in theatre). In Korea, he received a Meritorious Achievement Medal for military merit. After the war, he attended Ashland College while working at Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co. During this time, he met Joan Cullen on a blind date at Lake Erie and married her on August 11, 1956. Howard completed college and earned a Bachelor degree in Business. He worked in sales and marketing for 18 years at North Electric, Galion. He worked 10 years as a car salesman for Cheney's Motors, Crestline.
Howard loved sports and excelled in basketball during his school years; he was the leading scorer from 1948 to 1950, and was selected as All-County in 1950 his senior year at Ontario High School. He enjoyed spending his free time playing golf at Valley View (Jack Nicklaus was his idol) and he was a fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes. After retirement, his hobbies included painting the deck one too many times and working on his family genealogy project.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2018, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd. The memorial service conducted by Deacon Bill Horning will follow at 2:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest in Mansfield Memorial Park with military honors presented by the U.S. Army and the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to the Crestline Lions Club.
