James E. “Jim” Sheely passed away at the age of 86 at Crestwood Care Nursing Home in Shelby Ohio, where he had made his home for the past seven years. Born June 16, 1926 in Mansfield, Ohio, Jim had the distinctive honor, along with his proud parents, Earl E. and Grace T. (Mitchell) Sheely of being the first baby born in Mansfield General Hospital.
Jim went on to graduate from high school, and then, joined the United States Navy. He was involved with two campaigns in the Philippines during World War II, serving alongside his comrades of the U.S.S. Shiloh. Jim was honored later in his life, when the 2nd U.S.S. Shiloh was christened in New England. He was retired from Empire Detroit Steel after serving thirty-seven years as an electrician.
Those, that will remember Jim, will remember him for his care and concern for others. He enjoyed being able to see to the needs of others that lived close to him in the trailer park, and his love ran deep for his family as well. Being out of doors hunting and fishing, brought great enjoyment to Jim. Many proud and memorable moments marked the life of a very good hearted man.
Surviving are his three daughters and two sons in law, Grace Elizabeth (James) Copley, of Mansfield, Ohio, Rebecca Ann Sheely also of Mansfield, Ohio, and Tamala Lane (Alfredo) Gomez of Shelby, Ohio; a son and daughter in law, Mark (Penny) Sheely of Plymouth, Ohio; twelve grandchildren; and twenty-two great grandchildren.
