

Born March 12, 1917 in Mansfield, he was the son of John and Anna (Nuber) Fisher. He was a 1935 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School and following graduation attended the United States Army Air Corps “Special Schools”. In March of 1942, John enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and was accepted as an Aviation Cadet and in June of 1943 he graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant from Big Springs Bombardier School in Big Springs, Texas. He then attended the Army Air Corps Flible Serial Gunnery School in Laredo, Texas graduating in July of 1943 with an expert rating. John was assigned to the European Theatre Operations (ETO) serving with the 8th Air Force stationed in England, the 95th Bomb Squadron and the 334th Bomb Squadron Air Crews having flown 30 combat missions as a B-17 Crew Lead. John was rewarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. He returned to the United States in 1945 as a Captain having been honorably discharged. He joined Mansfield Hardware & Supply Company in 1949 as a Sales Representative and retired as Vice President and Secretary after 27 years of service. John was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the VFW Post 3494 and the American Legion Post 16. He was very proud of serving his country and enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by a sister, Katherine Zimmerman of Mansfield; nieces and nephews, John (Helen) Fisher, Mike (Peggy) Fisher, Beverly Kunkle, Michael (Barbara) Hill who also were his caregivers, Melanie Irwin, Larry Shannon, Barbara Ann (Ronald) Cantor, Roger Heinz, David Brown and Nancy Jane Smith; numerous great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews; his special friend, Mary L. Curran of Galion; and his special care givers, Sandy, Alice, Carolyn, Linda, Amy, Mandi, Joann and Deb. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Corrine G. “Connie” Fisher on July 24, 1986; a brother and two sisters, Mathias Fisher, Barbara Pasheilich, Elizabeth Shannon, Margaret Priess; and three nephews, David L. Zimmerman, Peter A. Zimmerman and Donald Priess.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield conducted by Pastor Bonnie Peltomaa. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Friends may call one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the funeral home.
