

John David Phillips, 62, of Mansfield, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at his home. Born July 23, 1949 in Waynesburg, PA, he was the son of William C. and Matilda (Saladna) Phillips. John was a 1967 graduate from Bedford High School and went on to graduate from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in aeronautical engineering and a Master’s Degree in mechanical engineering. One of his greatest achievements was developing numerous U.S. Patents while working as a research and development engineer at Owens-Corning Fiberglas for 30 years. John was an avid athlete and Buckeyes fan. He enjoyed woodworking and golfing (shooting his first hole-in-one in 2010).
He is survived by his mother, Matilda Phillips of Holiday, FL; son, John “Jay” David (Tana) Phillips, Jr of Tucson, AZ; daughters, Andrea Kay Phillips (Matt Besecker) of Columbus and Lauren Beth Phillips (Moe Seita) of Oakland, CA; grandchildren, Jude Alexander and Evan Gabrielle Phillips; fiancée, Tina Picman; brothers, William (Susan) Phillips of Naperville, IL, Edward (Pat) Phillips of Charlotte, NC, Joseph Phillips (Darcy Spicer) of Los Angeles, CA, Richard Phillips of Maple Heights, George (Ruth) Phillips of Columbus, and Stephen Phillips of Holiday, FL; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends, Collin, Ethan, Courtney, Josh, and Chase; and the mother of his children, Kathy Bayer of Tucson, AZ. Along with his father, John was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Phillips and beloved pet, Speck.
A memorial reception will be held Thursday, April 26, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. at The Ohio State University Golf Club Restaurant, 3605 Tremont Rd., Columbus, OH. A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, April 27, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Barnabas Catholic Church, Northfield, OH. Inurnment will be held in All Saints Cemetery, Northfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve the family of John Phillips.
