
John L. Reed, 65, of Mansfield, died Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus. Born February 11, 1943, in Mansfield, Ohio, he was the son of John Eugene and Freda Grace Harper Reed. A 1961 graduate of Madison High School, he had worked for Mansfield Tire and Rubber and was a Corrections Officer at the Ohio State Reformatory and MANCI for 25 years. A veteran of the United States Air Force, John was a member of VFW #9943, Voiture #20 of the 40 et 8, a life member of American Legion Post #16 and Amvets Post #26. He was also a member of Moose Lodge #341 and Sons of Herman. He enjoyed fishing and helping people and was a tireless worker at the Legion fish frys and 40 et 8 dinners.
Surviving are his wife, Pat Shipp Reed whom he married August 6, 1983; a son, Greg Reed of Mansfield; a sister, Carolyn Reynolds of Mansfield; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; a special great great niece, Mackenzie; aunts, Nita Kunz of Bellville and Mae Harper of Parkersburg, WV; and special friends, Bill and Kathy Stuart of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Paula Carney; and his mother and father-in-law, John and Mary Shipp.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2008, at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at the funeral home conducted by Pastor Andrew W. Jones of the First English Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery with full military services conducted by Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice.
