
Leonard Ernest Duncan, 74, of Mansfield, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. He was born in Mansfield on October 20, 1928 to Clyde Elmer and Mary Elizabeth Brannon Duncan. He attended Mansfield City Schools and lived in Mansfield most of his life. Leonard was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, The American Legion Post #16 and A.A.R.P. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army Air Force during the war. After the war, Leonard returned to Mansfield where he worked for White Westinghouse, prior to working for the United State Postal Service, where he retired from after twenty-eight years of service. In his retirement, he worked part-time for Lucas Manufacturing and Beckley-Cardy School Specialties until his retirement in 1999. Leonard was an avid golfer and enjoyed many sports as well as traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Florida Vigil Duncan, whom he married July 6, 1946 in Denver, Colorado; a daughter, Shirley Diane Duncan Swanger; a son and daughter-in-law, Justin and Lisa Duncan; three grandchildren, Tonya Swanger, Shannon Branham, and Nicole Swanger; a brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Martha Duncan; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Henrietta and Everett Ziegler and Esther and Ralph Gordon; five great grandchildren, all of Mansfield; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Edward Duncan and a daughter, Patricia Joan Duncan. The family would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to Dr. Robert E. Exten, Jr. and the entire staff at MedCentral Mansfield Cancer Care Center.
Family and friends may call at the Grace Episcopal Church, 41 Bowman St., one hour prior to funeral services that will be held Friday, November 15 at 1:00 p.m. Military graveside services will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to MedCentral Cancer Care Center.
