

Mary V. Hammer, 97, of Mansfield, Ohio, passed away on October 7, 2016. She was born on April 27, 1919 in Bucyrus, Ohio. Her parents, Vancho and Pare Fillo, immigrated to the United States from Florina, Greece. Her father arrived in 1911 and worked for five years to save enough money to send for Pare in 1916. They settled in Bucyrus where they owned and operated Fillo’s Grocery Store.
Mary graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1937. She attended Tiffin University where she studied the advanced secretarial course and graduated in 1939. She took the Civil Service Exam and at that time achieved the highest grade in her area of study in 22 years. Immediately following graduation, she worked for the State Unemployment Office in Columbus, Ohio until being offered a position with the State Department in Washington, D.C. She had many fond memories of her time in Washington including attending President Roosevelt’s inauguration. She moved back to Ohio to care for her mother.
She married George Hammer, Jr. on October 9, 1950. He preceded her in death on February 4, 1967. She worked as a legal secretary for Weldon, Huston & Keyser over 26 years before retiring in 1984. After retiring, she enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling.
She was an avid “garage saler” and collected antiques and glassware. She enjoyed taking pictures especially at Kingwood Center. She also liked to play cards and usually won!
She is survived by her daughter, Barb (Ron) Brubaker; her son, Greg (Mary Carol) Hammer; four grandchildren, Matt (Kim) Brubaker, Seth Brubaker, Lisa (Marc) Campbell and Laura Hammer; two step grandchildren, Beth (Alex) Todd and Ben Brubaker; and six great-grandchildren, Lucille Brubaker, Lilian and Amelia Brubaker, George and Arthur Campbell and Noah Hammer. She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul and sister-in-law, “Libby” Mary Fillo.
She will be greatly missed but remembered for her kindness and love. She had a wonderful positive outlook on life and always had a smile.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road, Ontario conducted by Pastor Matthew Pond. Friends may call one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m, at the funeral home on Saturday. Burial will follow at Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be given to OhioHealth MedCentral Hospice.
