
Paul R. Shafer, 72, of Mansfield, died Friday, November 12, 2010 at MedCentral Mansfield. Born February 2, 1938 in Woodfield, he was the son of Herbert A. and Grethel L. Cline Shafer. A 1956 graduate of Ashland High School, Paul served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1960 where he was stationed at Ft. Knox. He was a member of the Diamond Hills Baptist Church where he was chairman of Trustees, served as an usher, and was a driver for kids on the church van. Paul was also a member of the Phoenix Society and the Elks. He was a volunteer at the Cleveland Metro Burn Unit, working at 24 different burn camps, and also volunteered at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home. Paul worked at AK Steel, the State Highway Garage and also sold Insurance. In his free time, he loved to garden and work in his yard.
Paul is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carolyn Shaver Shafer of Mansfield; children, Trent Angie Logue Shafer of Gilbert, S.C. and Kevin Shafer of Wellington; grandchildren, Shaylan "Sweet Pea" Shafer, Chris and Samantah Louge and their children, Alexis, Tyler, Kennidy, and Carson, and Tanya and Michael Cook and their children, Cody Lowe, Michael, and Brice Lowe; father, Herbert A. Shafer; brothers, Keith Shari Shafer of Ashland and David Shafer of Wooster; sisters, Linda Powell of Ashland and Judy Dale Anderson of Westerville; mother-in-law, Mary Shaver; sisters-in-law, Joyce Lomax and Ronda Brad Kazebee; ten nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother on February 19, 2010; brother, Harry Shafer on July 11, 1977, and brother-in-law, David Powell on November 11, 2007.
Friends may call Sunday, November 14, 2010 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 308 Claremont Ave., Ashland. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Diamond Hills Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Christopher Thomas and special friend, Dr. Richard Fratianne. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Military graveside services conducted by the Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial detail will be held at Oak Grove Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Burn Fund at Metro Health.
