
Richard D. 'Dick' Gilger, 86, of Ontario, died Monday morning, March 12, 2007 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. He was born July 26, 1920 in Greenwich to the late George and Lena Schambs Gilger. Dick was a graduate of Greenwich High School and Bliss College in Columbus with a degree in Accounting. He worked for 43 years as an accountant for the Westinghouse Corporation in Mansfield. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 on the USS Pennsylvania and the USS Butte.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn Hawkins Gilger of Ontario; his children, Paul Gilger of Santa Rosa, California, and Joan and Mark Stear of Cincinnati; grandchildren, Sarah Stear of Los Angeles, and Eric Stear of Cincinnati; and one brother, John Gilger of Greenwich. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Joan George, and infant, Gladys Gilger; and one brother, Dale Gilger.
Friends are invited on Thursday, March 15 to Mayflower Congregational Church on 548 N. McElroy Rd. in Mansfield, where there will be family visitation from 10:30-11:30 a.m. followed by a short service conducted by Dr. Gary Wilson, and light lunch. They are also invited to a military graveside service at 2 p.m. conducted by Richland County Joint Veteran's Service at Edwards Grove Cemetery at 4130 S. Edwards Rd., Greenwich, and a dessert reception at the Ripley Church following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mayflower Congregational Church Memorial Fund. The Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors assisted the family with arrangements.
