

Richard “Dick” L. Helfrich, 90, passed away late Saturday evening at his home. Passing on his birthday, he was born in 1921 in Crestline, Ohio, to the late Roy T. and Golda Pearl Fern (Pickering) Helfrich. Dick was a WWII veteran serving his country in the U.S. Navy in the Airship Service. He was formerly employed for 42 years with the Penn Central Railroad, serving most recently as the Vice President of Real Estate Administration. Dick was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Crestline. Blessed with much musical talent, he enjoyed playing the saxophone in several dance bands and was a past member of the American Federation of Musicians. Dick was also a member and Past Master of the Arcana Masonic Lodge #272, F. & A.M. in Crestline.
He leaves behind his wife of 70 years, Evelyn M. (Shenefield) Helfrich; son, David L. (Mary Ann) Helfrich of New Jersey; daughter, Carol A. (Gary) Northeimer of PA; four granddaughters, Angela Thomas, Jennifer DiMartino, Elizabeth Ehsani and Katie Morrison; five great-grandchildren, Robert and Clayton Thomas, Nick and Arman Ehsani and Evelyn Morrison; a brother, Dr. Jack Helfrich of Burbank, CA; and a special niece, Sharon Payne. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Grudier; and three sisters-in-law, Rita Helfrich, Janet O’Leary and Frances King.
There will be no visitation at this time. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Crestline at a later date with military honors. The Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to assist the family of Mr. Helfrich with arrangements.
