Richard "Dick" Marshall, 76, of Mansfield, passed away Tuesday evening, September 27, 2016, at Arbors at Mifflin following a courageous five year battle with multiple myeloma. He was born March 24, 1940, in Loudonville, Ohio, to the late Levi and C. Helen (Bowman) Marshall.
He grew up in Perrysville and graduated from Perrysville High School in 1958 where he was an outstanding athlete. He was inducted into both the Perrysville/Loudonville Hall of Fame and Ashland County Hall of Fame in 2014. After graduating, Dick enlisted in the U.S. Army spending 18 months in Germany and 2 years in the Reserves. He continued his athletic career playing basketball, football, and track. Sports were a huge part of his entire life, and he played in a softball league in Florida where he wintered with his wife, played on the softball team at Sprint and enjoyed water skiing in his free time. He was an avid fan of area high school sports-especially basketball-NASCAR, the Cleveland Indians and OSU sports.
He began his working career at F.E. Myers in Ashland where he worked for 7 years. Dick retired from Sprint after 33 years as an installer/repairman. Being outdoors suited him and Dick enjoyed camping, boating, riding his motorcycles, and keeping up a beautiful yard. He was meticulous in cleaning his "toys" and was fond of attending classic car shows. Dick was a member of many organizations including: Lexington Moose Lodge #2511; Mansfield Elks Lodge #56; Mansfield V.F.W. Post #9943, Grace St.; Amvets Post #26; and IBEW Local 688.
Dick was a faithful man who knew the Lord and this faith brought him through the last few months which were very tough. He attended Impact Worship in Mansfield and Fellowship Church in Englewood, Florida. He was an excellent example of what a man should be: kind, loving, protective, and a confidante. He was affectionately known as "Pal" to many of his friends. Dick loved his family dearly and was very proud of each and every one of them. He found great joy in watching his grandchildren in their various sports activities. He loved his animals who kept him company and gave him comfort over the years.
Left to cherish his wonderful legacy is his wife of 27 years, Sherry Posa Marshall; children, Christine Marshall of Orlando, FL, Randy Marshall of Pell City, AL, David (Annette) Marshall of Dover, OH, Melinda (Jeff) Price of Oviedo, FL, and Richelle (Scott) Deever of Springfield, OH; grandchildren, Greg (Aubrey) Caugherty of Mansfield, Malorie (Cory) Wenzel of Lexington, Ricky Marshall of Mansfield, Whitney (Mitchell) Derr of New Albany, OH, Annie Goligoski of Perrysburg, Brad Mayfield of Dover, Chelsea Marshall of New Philadelphia, OH, Austin Marshall of Dover, Olivia Price of Oviedo, FL, and William Deever and Anna Deever, both of Springfield, OH; and two great-grandchildren, Marissa and Kailyn Caugherty of Mansfield. He is also survived by his siblings, Steve (Teri) Marshall of Marysville, OH, Bonnie Bowen of Loudonville, Gaye Lawhorn of Butler, OH, and Vesta (Bill) Kreiling of Loudonville; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Tagg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his treasured dogs, Fritz and Halie.
