

Val L. Young, 79, of Caledonia, passed away on Friday, August 24, 2018 at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Val was born on September 24, 1938 in Greenville, Ohio to Marion and Myrtle (Wheatcraft) Young.
Val was a 1956 graduate of Galion High School where he served as High Y President and District President. He was a graduate of the FBI Academy. He served in the United States Army where he spent 28 months in Boussac, France as a Sergeant in charge of a medical lab. Val was employed as a police officer for 29 years with the Galion Police Department with the last six years serving as Chief of Police. Throughout his career he made many accomplishments, but one he was proud of was he started the DARE program in Galion. Val was a former member of the Galion Fraternal Order of Police, a member of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, FBI National Academy Associates, and Copus Hill Chapter Model A Ford Club. He served as Director of the Penn-Ohio Model A Ford Club, and served for the Marion Medical Reserve Core. Val was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Galion where he loved singing in the choir. He was a member of the Galion Masonic Lodge #414 (F & AM), Galion Masonic Chapter #142 (R.A.M), and the Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus. Val was a dedicated husband and father. He loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed tinkering with his antique cars and traveling.
Val leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Mary Jane (West) Young; his daughter, Valery and Jeff Johnson; son, Eric and Kathy Young; brother, Bob Young; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister, Gene Young, Eileen Westbrook, and Joe Young.
The family will welcome friends on Sunday, August 26, 2018 from 2:00-5:00 pm at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington Springmill Road. A Masonic Service will be held at 5:00 pm. Rev. Mike Corwin will officiate the funeral service on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Galion with military honors being performed by Crestline/Galion Veterans Military Funeral Burial Detail. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Christ United Methodist Church for the refurbishment of the stained glass windows.
