Webb Bernhardt, age 70, of Lucas, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Wooster Community Hospital. Webb was born and raised in Indiana, where he lived most of his life before relocating to Ohio 3 1/2 years ago. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his legacy of love, hard work, and adventure will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
Webb grew up in a close-knit family and fondly recalled his childhood days as a Boy Scout, enjoying camping, and band trips and all the camaraderie that came with it. As the eldest sibling, he was always “the Boss” in the best sense—a protective and guiding presence who helped shape the lives of his younger siblings. His love for his family was immeasurable, and he was a great big brother, a role he cherished throughout his life.
A proud graduate of Southport High School in Indianapolis (Class of 1973), Webb went on to earn a degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University in 1977. A true Boilermaker at heart, Webb remained a passionate supporter of his alma mater throughout his life.
Webb’s professional career was marked by a deep commitment to his work and community. He began his career at the City of Indianapolis Wastewater Treatment Plant, where he met the love of his life, Cindy. They married in 1989, and together they shared a rich and fulfilling life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Webb oversaw the expansion of the plant and played an integral role in ensuring its success. Webb transitioned to environmental contracting with Heritage Environmental and later provided consulting services at American Structurepoint.
Webb had a zest for life that was contagious. He was a true adventurer at heart, traveling across the United States with Cindy on their motorcycles, a passion they both shared. As an active member of the Indianapolis BMW Club, Webb served as president multiple times and cherished the friendships he made through his love of motorcycling.
Webb’s hobbies and interests were as diverse as his spirit. He enjoyed backpacking, sailing, woodworking, and anything with a motor. His mischievous sense of humor and playful spirit made him a favorite uncle to his nieces and nephews, with whom he had a special bond. Webb never hesitated to offer a bit of fun and friendly torment to them.
Since moving to Ohio, Webb embraced the local community and helped support local soap box derbies. Another cause dear to his heart, Webb, was a member of the Mansfield Power Squadron. His enthusiasm for these events, as well as his love for all mechanical things, made him an integral part of his new community.
Webb’s love for the outdoors and his passion for making the world a better place through his work were constant throughout his life. Whether it was through his engineering career, his environmental efforts, or his commitment to sustainability, Webb always strived to improve the world around him. His connection to nature, his belief in preserving the environment, and his dedication to service were core principles that guided everything he did.
Webb is survived by his beloved wife, Cindy (Fort) Bernhardt; his siblings, Dave Bernhardt, Audrey (Paul) Hartman, and Phyllis Tubesing; 11 nieces and nephews; 12 great-nieces and nephews; his sisters-in-law, Judy (Ted) Brenneman and Evelyn (Eric) Steensen; his brothers-in-law, John Fort and David (Pat Checkel) Fort; his mother-in-law, Shirley Fort; and his cousins, Carolyn Arnold, and David (Marie) and Kevin (Heidi) Weller. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Esther (Ries) Bernhardt.
Family and friends may gather from 1:00-2:00 pm on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Wappner Funeral Directors, Mansfield, 98 S. Diamond Street. The Celebration of Life Service will begin at 2:00 pm.
