Alan was my first supervisor when I transferred to the Bridge Division in 1989.  He taught me a lot and knew how to get the best from me.  Once he retired from TxDOT I was fortunate to work with him again on a design-build project in 2005.  Although we were on different sides of the project his patience with me, and his great coaching/mentoring attitude helped me get through the project.  It has always been a pleasure to know Alan and he will be missed.

I first met Alan at Abiding Love Lutheran Church in about 1992.  I quickly learned that Alan was a man that got things done.  From helping found the church, to serving a President, to repairing stuff or building new things - it got done.  But, not with the required brainstorming, analysis, discussion, and planning.  When we started the new Sanctuary Building, we teamed up a Building Committee made up of 5-6 engineers including Alan.  I often felt sorry for the architect and contractor having to deal with all of us and our ideas/opinions, but, with Alan's motivation, we got it done.  I later had the privilege of working with Alan at HDR.  I continue to be amazed by how Alan was respected by his peers in the industry, but more so admired by the younger engineers that he taught.  Alan was an engineer's engineer.  He taught people how to think, how to challenge yourself and ideas, and how to search for a better, more elegant solution.  He set an example of technical excellence, moral character, and doing the right things.  He not only impacted careers, but lives as well.  It's safe to say that Abiding Love and HDR are better places today because of the legacy Alan leaves behind.

I only had the pleasure of knowing Alan a very short time, mostly running into him when he would stop by the HDR Round Rock office. But, even in those few conversations, it wasn't hard to get a sense of the kind of man he was. He had a smile that was so warm and inviting and a general charisma that made him a pleasure to be around and demonstrated why he was so well respected by everyone he knew. He will be missed.

I met Alan as my first supervisor at TxDOT in 1987. I assisted him in the design of the San Antonio Y and then the Austin US 183 segmental bridge designs. I am proud to have helped him achieve a goal of providing a strong solution to the construction of variable width box segments in a gore area with the use of constant width precast segments combined with variable width cast-in-place segments. Pardon me for the technical jargon, but Alan would appreciate it.

We stayed close as personal and professional friends from that time forward, especially when we were reunited professionally at HDR in 2004 at the SH 130 project. I remember lunch with Alan the first day I arrived, “no place to eat right around here but Wendy's”.

I have many fond memories of Alan, but my most cherished memory was listening to his stories of designing and building his dream home in Burnet. I think that house and property was the crowning achievement of a long career spent carefully planning and evaluating details. He talked of how he and Betty worked tirelessly and collaboratively to refine the floor plan, orientation within existing trees, cabinet design, natural lighting, energy saving features, landscaping, and every other minute detail. I am sure that there is an extensive library of spreadsheets and sketches documenting it all. When Lisa and I visited and saw the final product, I was mind boggled, but not surprised about how well thought out it was. I believe this project and the results are a great expression of the love between Alan and Betty. I am very happy that Alan got to work with his life partner and see this dream become a reality.

Alan was a great mentor and friend to those of us that worked with him. He always took the time to see how you were doing and was never too busy to help you or answer a question. I will miss Alan's calm way of communicating no matter how stressful the circumstance. Alan was a blessing to all that new him.

Alan was never too busy to spend 5 minutes asking me how things were going.  He was one of the most genuine individuals I've had the pleasure of knowing.

I had the pleasure of working with Alan for the entire time he was with HDR, starting when he joined us to help with the SH 130 project.  Alan dealt with issues at work the same way he dealt with issues in his personal life - with vigor, compassion, and that innate sense of doing the right things for the right reasons.  The world lost a great man, but his legacy and his lessons taught will live on forever.  So long until we meet again in Heaven.

Alan was such a positive influence in my life personally and professionally.  I had the pleasure of working directly with him for the last eleven years and he was a great role model.  He painted a picture of what it looks like to be respected by all of your peers after building a reputation based on expertise and integrity.  Alan was always the one we went to when we had questions with no answers.  His responses were often as philosophical in nature as they were technical, but through his musings he taught us all so much.

All my sympathy to you, Betty.  When I think of Alan, I always remember riding the school bus with him and his wearing a slide-rule on his belt...he was always a true engineer.  And what a kind and gentle person. With deepest sympathy...

Dear Mrs. Matejowsky, Brad and Blake,  I'm sorry about your loss.  I humbly pray that our Lord Heavenly Father place favor over you in a manner that may remove the anguish of your bereavement and leave you only with the cherished memories of Alan.  Please know that your family and Alan will always be in our hearts and prayers.

I first worked with Alan in the early 1980s as a graduate student at UT. Alan was the TxDOT liaison for my research project. Over the years I was fortunate to have the chance to catch up with him at TxDOT functions and ASBI conferences around the country. I always enjoyed his company and considered myself fortunate to have spent time with him, both personally and professionally. It was great to see him in Portland in October. I know he will be greatly missed by all of you.

I've always counted on a smile, a hug, and a cheerful countenance upon seeing Alan at our family gatherings.  Heaven's gain, for sure, is our extended family's loss.  I am praying, Betty, Brad, Blake, Lacye, and Delaney, that our God will grant you the peace which passes all understanding.  I am sad beyond words.

Alan was a great engineer. I was glad to know Alan and to have worked with him 30 years ago.  He was tough but he really cared about the profession and the progress of younger engineers.

Alan, Betty, Brad, and Blake were our dear, across-the-fence neighbors for many years till they moved to Burnet County.  Alan worked intently on his home and garden,  and was a kind and friendly neighbor.  We have missed all of them, but now it is hard to realize that we will not see his gentle smile again.  I'm sure, however, that his family takes comfort in the meaningfulness of his commitment to his church and God.

Betty, I so enjoyed seeing the galley of photos.  We spent many hours riding on the same yellow school bus going to and from school.  I was so saddened to read of Alan's passing in the Standard Times.  I have so many fond memories of both of you from our youth.  Many the peach of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be with you in this difficult time.

I had the pleasure of work with Alan on the SH130 project. He quickly moved from acquaintance, to friend, to someone I greatly admired. His skills as a bridge engineer were only exceeded by character. Name any town in Texas, and Alan could give you advise as to where to eat. I enjoyed his love of 6 man football, and shared his love for barbeque.  He will be missed. My prayers are with the family.

Betty, I want to give my sincerest condolences to the Matejowsky family. Your family has been on my mind and in my prayers since I heard the news. Alan was a wonderful man. He was a mentor for me. He hired me at TxDOT, hired me again at PB and was very influencial in me coming to HDR. I truly enjoyed working with Alan. His smile was always uplifting and I am a better person for knowing him.

I worked with Alan for several years at Parsons Brinckerhoff. We traveled the state together marketing for work. He would always tease me, in his humble manner, about being an aggie. He was a good road companion and a very good man. He will be missed.

Betty,  I was very saddened to read about Alan's passing.  He was always such a likeable guy.  I couldn't help but smile when I read in his obituary that he liked "6-man football".  As the old saying goes, "You can take the boy out of the country, but......".

It has been on my mind ever since I heard the sad news that Alan had passed away. I met Alan in 1986 when I started working in the Bridge Division. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Alan's unexpected passing.  I had spoken with him only a few weeks ago.  He was, as always, full of life and happiness and optimism.  Alan was a gifted engineer and an encouraging and thoughtful mentor.  He and all his family are in our thoughts and prayers.

I worked with Alan at several points through out our careers designing bridges. He had a remarkable brain and will be missed in the bridge world.

I met Alan when I was a student at UT-Austin over 25 years ago.  He was very supportive of research, and brought a great practical perspective to what we did.  He was a great bridge engineer and a dear person, and he will be missed.

I worked with Alan at the Tx DOT bridge division.  I always had good experiences on projects because he would always take the time to answer my questions.  sometimes we  would eat our lunches in the breaks room and he always provided good conversations and some laughs.  I will miss him dearly.  My prayers to the family.

Betty, I am saddened to hear of Alan's passing.  I only recently met you both since I own land nearby in Backbone Creek.  I thought you both would be great neighbors and enjoyed visiting with you both the two or three times we met.  I will miss not getting to know Alan better.  Betty, my thoughts and prayers are with you in these hard days.

When I survey the wondrous cross...the beautiful hand made wooden one that hangs above our altar at Abiding Love Lutheran Church, I always think of Alan and his wonderful, talented hands that crafted it.  A true gentleman has left us.

Our prayers have been with all of you and we will continue praying for your family.  I always think of Alan when viewing the Cross in the Sanctuary each Sunday, a true faithful talent whose time and generosity I always valued.

Blake, I'm saddened about the loss of your father.  I can see that he passed forward to you his keen sense to details, meticulous, and methodical work ethics.
