Our beautiful Grandmother, Alice Elaine Jones decided that she will not be joining the festivities for her 100th Birthday Celebration! Grandma was 99 years young and was just a couple weeks shy of 100, when she peacefully went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, March 21, 2026. For the past 10 years, Alice had become a loved and adored resident at Granite Mesa Health Center. Her bright smile and calm demeanor endeared all the staff members to her. Alice is survived by her Grandchildren, Chance Hardy of Sunset Beach, California, Casey Hardy of Brea, California, Summer Marcyes of Austin, Texas and Kyndall Freer of Seattle, Washington. Alice is also survived by countless, beautiful great-grandchildren.
Alice Elaine was born on April 2, 1926 in the tiny town of Barre, Vermont to parents Lula Lackey Palmer and William E. Palmer. She had a peaceful childhood and was raised in the natural beauty of Vermont, enjoying simple, beautiful things — birds, flowers and plants. In the Spring of 1942, Alice graduated from high school and then moved to Montpelier, Vermont, the state capital, where more employment opportunities could be found. She went on to work for the local telephone company and within a short time, she became a telephone operator. It was during this season that she met and soon married her first husband, Harry Freer. They married on June 8, 1946. Harry and Alice resided in Montpelier for a few more years and welcomed two children, Robert (Bob) and Karen. Harry’s job offered a brighter future for him in sunny, Southern California, so in the late 1950’s the family moved across the country to start a new chapter. While the children seemed to acclimate well to the sunshine and palm trees the marriage between Alice and Harry did not. They dissolved their marriage in the early 1970’s.
As Alice’s children grew older, married and started families of their own, they all moved to Texas. It wasn’t long after their departure that Alice packed up and joined her children in the Lone Star State. It was there in Austin, that Alice met her second husband, Leonard Jones. They dated a short time and then married in 1981. The two lived happily in Lago Vista, on the outskirts of Austin. Alice enjoyed a long career in fashion retail where she worked in women’s fine clothing. She and Leonard stayed happily married for 39 years until Leonard passed away in 2020. Together, they deeply enjoyed their family and often times were found playing games with the grandchildren and spent wonderful quality time with them. Alice loved her children so much. Her son, Robert (Bob) Freer passed away in 2011 and her daughter Karen passed away in 2024.
In her spare time, Alice LOVED playing B-I-N-G-O! She would meet her daughter Karen and others at the BINGO hall and play for hours! Later in life, when Alice was in her late 80’s she was still enjoying her BINGO days until she ended up in JAIL! Yep, it’s true! Alice left the Austin BINGO Hall one evening and somehow was confused on how to get home. When she turned onto the freeway, she just kept going. And going! And going! Her family was very worried about her and contacted the Police where they went on to alert the public with a ”Silver Alert” on TV along with Alice’s picture! Finally, after a few hours of driving, Alice stopped for gas, where the clerk inside (miraculously) recognized her from the picture that had been shown on all TV stations! Alice had driven herself all the way to Dallas! The police were notified and she was taken into their care and custody until her daughter and son-in-law came for her. It was scary but Alice just laughed and laughed. That was the end of Alice’s driving career!
We celebrate the fun and vibrant 100 years of life that our beautiful Grandmother lived. She had a fun and joyful personality! Loved by everyone! May she rest in the peace of Jesus and be reunited with all her family members who’ve gone before her.
