

Betty Jo Fife Smith, formerly of Mart, Texas, passed away March 1, 2020 at St. David’s Hospital, Georgetown, Texas at the age of 94. She was born in Limestone County to James Morris Fife and Lucille Ramsey Fife. She graduated from Mart High School and married Roy A. “Shiney” Smith in 1941.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Roy of 58 years and grandson Travis Mueck. She is survived by her children James L. Smith & wife Debbie of Burnet, Tx., Judy Smith Wayland & husband David Jack of Burnet, Tx., and Andrew M. Smith and wife Barbara of Lott, Tx., grandchildren Nicole L. Smith of Brooklyn, NY., and Jeb S. Smith and wife Crystal of Manvel, Tx.
Betty was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Mart. She loved telling stories about growing up in Mart and of all the people who have come and gone being a wealth of knowledge on Mart history.
One of her fondest memories was when she was drum major for the Mart High Panther Band. A favorite saying of hers was, “I’m as old as Read’s Grocery Store.” She made the absolute best corn bread dressing and was a wonderful homemaker but spent the rest of her time trying to make her kids behave.
A private service for the family will be held at a later date. Memorials can be given to the First United Methodist Church of Mart, Texas or the Panther Band of Mart High School.
