Gary Lew Guthrie, 82, of Spicewood, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on December 12, 2024 with his loving family by his side. Gary was born on October 4, 1942 in San Antonio, Texas, the eldest son of Lloyd George Guthrie Sr. and Hazel Sharline (Loring) Guthrie.
Gary’s childhood was spent in many different cities around the western half of the U.S., such as San Antonio, TX; San Diego, CA; Oakland, CA; and Seattle, WA as his father, who was in the Navy, changed duty stations and jobs. He graduated from Seattle’s Roosevelt High School in 1960.
Gary attended Laurelhurst United Presbyterian Church in Seattle and was president of the youth group. It was at this church that Gary met the love of his life, Susan Williams. They married on May 16, 1964 in Seattle, WA.
Gary honorably served his country in the Navy as an electronics technician. He was stationed in Memphis, TN from 1964 through 1968 before moving back to the Seattle area and settling down in Covington, WA. Gary spent another 8 years with the Navy Reserves out of Whidbey Island, WA.
Gary utilized his military trade to secure a position in 1968 at Sperry Flight Systems (Honeywell) in Tukwila, WA. He worked as an avionics technician, troubleshooting control panels for commercial jets for all of the major airlines. He retired from Honeywell after more than 30 years and relocated to Spicewood, TX to care for his ailing parents.
Gary’s favorite hobby was bowling. He was a lifelong bowler and joined many leagues throughout his retirement years in Texas. He loved sharing his bowling stories (and weather reports😊) with family via text. His last recorded average was 142 several months ago in August.
Family was important to Gary, and he looked forward to spending time with his wife, kids, and grandkids, playing board games; going on road trips, camping trips, fishing excursions; visiting outdoor parks and theme parks.
Gary was preceded in death by his loving wife Susan (Williams) Guthrie, and his eldest son Steven Micheal Guthrie. Those left to remember Gary, and cherish many wonderful memories, include his brother, Lloyd George (Bernie) Guthrie, Jr., and five of Gary’s children: Rob (Heidi) Guthrie, Barbara Guthrie (Charles Tapp), Laura Swaffard, Amy (James) Hollister, and Jennifer (Jay) Schulz and his daughter in law, Teresa Guthrie. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild, along with life-long friends.
As per Gary’s wishes, no formal memorial service will be held.
