Glenna was born March 6, 1935, at home on the family farm in Maine Township, Linn County, Iowa. She was the fourth child born to Glenn and Marie Platner. She spent her elementary years at a one-room school near Marion, Iowa, before attending high school in Marion. After HS graduation, she worked for a couple of years at local banks before attending Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Glenna met her husband, Duane Whitmarsh at Coe. The two were married on August 26, 1956. They raised two daughters, and Duane became a partner in the accounting firm Deloitte & Touche. Glenna was very proud of her family’s achievements.
After Duane passed away at 56 from a brain tumor, Glenna settled in San Antonio, Texas, where she devoted more time to her passion for watercolor art. She was also active in the community, supporting organizations such as the Mission Road Developmental Center, and the University of the Incarnate Word. Glenna was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio for many years.
Glenna also enjoyed spending time at her second home on Lake LBJ, where the family would gather and enjoy all that the Horseshoe Bay community had to offer.
Glenna is survived by her brother, her two daughters, four grandsons, and eight great-grandchildren.
The family plans to hold a private gathering to remember her life at a later date.
If you wish to honor Glenna, the family would be happy to have you consider a donation to a charity of your choice in her honor, or to donate to Mission Roads at the link below.
