In loving memory of Mary “Gwyna” Compton, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was born on April 7, 1930, in Stamford, Texas, and passed away on December 1, 2023, at the age of 93. She is now in the loving arms of Jesus, whom she served faithfully all her life.
Mary, or Gwyna as she was affectionately known, was a woman of grace, kindness, and joy. She devoted her life to God and family, working the kitchen at Camp Peniel in Marble Falls, Texas for 50 years. She loved cooking and serving delicious meals to the campers and staff, and was always ready to share a smile, a hug, or a word of encouragement. She was a blessing to everyone who met her, and a witness of God's love and faithfulness.
Gwyna also had a passion for teaching and reaching out to children. She found great joy in teaching Sunday school at her church and holding Good News Clubs in her home. She had a special place in her heart for babies, and was always eager to hold, cuddle, and pray for them. She had a gift for making children feel loved and valued, and for planting seeds of faith in their hearts.
Gwyna was a loving and supportive mother to her four daughters, Janice, Renee, Mary, and Lisa, and a wonderful mother-in-law to Cliff. She was a proud and doting grandmother to her eight grandchildren, Kirk, Rosie (husband Kris), Travis, Chelsea (husband Jay), Tyler, Sarah (husband Chase), Dylan (wife Josie), a delighted great-grandmother to her 13 great-grandchildren as well as a special aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. She cherished every moment she spent with her family, and was always interested in their lives, achievements, and dreams.
Gwyna's favorite place was her front porch, where she spent many hours on that old swing, enjoying her beautiful flowers and watching the wild birds while visiting with loved ones. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, such as reading, gardening, and crocheting. Gwyna found great joy in the many pets she had throughout the years. She adored them all.
She had a sense of humor and a zest for life that never faded, even in her later years. She was always grateful for what she had, and never complained about what she lacked. She was a woman of strength, courage, and resilience, who faced many challenges and hardships with grace and faith.
Gwyna was preceded in death by her parents, Zola Mae and Floyd Johnson, her sister Joan Williams, and her son-in-law Allen McCannon. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service that will live on in the hearts and lives of her family and friends. She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
We pray that we will honor Gwyna's memory by following her example of loving God and loving others. She was a precious jewel in God's crown, and a treasure in our hearts.
All are welcome to join us for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, January 6, 2024 4pm at Camp Peniel (397 Peniel Path, Marble Falls, TX 78654).
