On Monday, September 24, 2018, Laura Bess Burton, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away at the age of 97 years. Laura will be forever and lovingly remembered by her children, Judy (Jim) Henderson, Bill (Judy) Burton, her grandchildren, Julie (Russell) Merchant, Kimberly (Kevin) Reitan, Toni (Ronnie) Gainey, and Ceslie Ellerbee. Laura will also be dearly missed by her great-grand children, Kassidy & Kaelan Reitan, Brit Merchant, Caden & Caitlyn Bullock, Rain & Stevie Gainey, and by her many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Laura Bess King Burton was born on January 30, 1921 in Teague, Texas. She was the fifth of seven children, including five brothers and one sister. She married Royce Lyle Burton of Houston, Texas on February 16, 1940 at the age of 19 years. They moved to Trinity, Texas in 1959 with their two children, Judy and Bill, where Royce Burton became the Superintendent of schools until his retirement in 1976. Laura Bess and her husband were loved and respected by the school staff and community. They were long time members of the First United Methodist Church, where Laura was active in service projects and served on the church newsletter committee. She was an avid, masterful homemaker and enjoyed yard work as well as helping Royce keep an impressive vegetable garden year after year. She loved her Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Astros, and she still loyally watched each year well into her 90’s. Laura enjoyed 58 beautiful years of marriage, had two children, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, all six siblings and her husband. Laura Bess will be remembered as a strong, smart, kind and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a bright light in our lives and will be dearly missed, as we feel truly blessed to have had her with us for so many wonderful years.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 2, at 5:00-7:00 PM, at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 1805 Highway 281 North, Marble Falls, Texas 78654.
A prayer service in memory of Laura will be held on Wednesday, October 3, at 1:00 PM, at Woodlawn Garden of Memories, 1101 Antoine Dr., Houston, Texas 77055.
