Mary Maxine Scoggins Rushing departed from this life on the morning of October 1, 2010. She was born on April 3, 1924 in Louisiana to George and Savannah Scoggins. She was a wonderful mother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, cousin, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many.
After completing her education at Tulane University in New Orleans with a Masters in Social Work, she returned to the Rio Grande Valley where her parents and two brothers lived in 1949. She was a visiting teacher for the Harlingen ISD and she taught 2nd grade for several years. She went back to school and received her special education certification so that she could help children with special needs. She was hearing impaired all of her life and this was her way of helping other children with special needs.
After retiring in 1979 from education, she volunteered with hospice at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen and was a volunteer in the H.O.S.T. reading program in the Harlingen ISD. She started another chapter in her long life journey when she built a new home on Meadowlakes, Texas where her only daughter lived. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen for over 50 years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marble Falls where she made many new friends and enjoyed going to her great grand-sons sporting events. She had a hat to wear to match every outfit and was commonly known as the “Hat Lady”. She resided at Gateway Gardens and Granite Mesa Health Center in Marble Falls during the last three years of her life.
Maxine has completed her life journey on this earth and has departed to be with Jesus, her husband (Maloy), her parents (George and Savannah Scoggins), her sister (Verla Mynier), cousins and many other friends. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Russell Roper, two grandchildren Jason Roper and wife Rhonda and Amy Briseno and husband Joe, five great grandchildren, Joshua, Natalie, Hayden, Charlotte, and Cade, two brothers, Jack Scoggins and wife Tina of McAllen and Kenneth Scoggins and wife Ruth of Harlingen and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She can now hear, see, and walk again as her chains are broken and she has been set free. The family appreciates all of the caregivers who helped us with her care over the last 15 months.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. Funeral service will be Friday, October 8, 2010 at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas at 11:00 AM.
