Randall Scott Nickel went to be with his Heavenly Father on March 25, 2026. Scott was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 7, 1944. He was a beloved husband and a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a respected businessman, a lawyer and was privileged to live all around the world during his career. He served in the Army as a Military Police Officer and always held a strong reverence for the Armed Services and his country. He was a faithful Christian who practiced what he believed in all parts of his life. He was an avid golfer, a tennis player, and a devoted fan of the University of Oklahoma. He loved his family unconditionally and was fortunate to have many deep and true friendships. He was the most kind and decent man many have met.
Scott grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and after a brief stint at Westminster College in Missouri, attended the University of Oklahoma for undergraduate and graduate school. While at OU, he met and married Gail Bandy Nickel and began a 47 year marriage. During this time, the Army and his career with Phillips 66 took them to Panama, Texas, Oklahoma, Africa, London, Iran and Kansas. They had three children that they raised together: David Scott Nickel, Brian (Bubba) Bandy Nickel and Carrie Ellen Nickel McDonald.
While living all over the world, Scott and Gail considered Bartlesville their home. They created many lifelong friendships and loved their community. He thrived at Phillips 66 and was thankful for a treasure of people he considered to not only be his colleagues, but most importantly his friends. During his forties, he attended night school at the University of Tulsa where he obtained his law degree graduating Magna Cum Laude. This helped accelerate his career that culminated in his position as Director of Compensation and Benefits for Phillips 66.
Scott and Gail’s family continued to grow with the addition of in-laws and grandchildren. In 2001, they began to live part time in Horseshoe Bay, Texas and Scott found the new special place in his life. Fishing, golf and time at the lake house became a family tradition. In the early 2000s, he retired and he and Gail moved full-time to Texas. During his retirement, while fishing and golfing, he continued to use his law degree by dedicating his time to protecting, serving and legally representing many children and young adults suffering from abuse and neglect. His legacy with that work is still remembered today.
His lifelong friend and beautiful wife Gail passed away in 2015. Scott served faithfully through her death and was an example to everyone. Despite his efforts to remain single, he was introduced to Patricia Abels and had the distinct pleasure of falling deeply in love and spending the rest of his years married to an amazing woman and true friend. They have spent their time traveling, golfing, walking, playing bridge and maintaining a lively social calendar with many friends and family and of course their cherished dog, Penny.
Scott is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia and his children and step children and their families: David and Shannon Nickel and their family: Jack, Quincy, Sam, Kaitlyn (fiancé), Crew, Maddie, Wyatt, Rhett, Lauren and Sutton; Bubba and Aime Nickel and their family: Luke, Taylor, Banks, Trip and Raeney (fiancé); Ryan McDonald and Amy (fiancé) and his family: Scott, Ava and Mia ; Kelly and Rob Bates and their family, Ian and Caroline and Todd and Lolla and Luis Abels.
Scott was predeceased by his parents, Bolte and Maxine Nickel, his wife, Gail Nickel, his brother Gary Nickel and his precious daughter, Carrie McDonald. Scott lived his life well using unshakable faith, patriotism, integrity and humor to create a lasting legacy within his family, friends and community. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at All Saints Presbyterian Church, 7808 Rialto Blvd, Austin, Texas on Friday, April 10, 2026 at 4 pm. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Court Appointed Special Advocates of Travis County
