Martin Adam Sowinek was born May 8, 1925, in Velenje, Yugoslavia (now Slovenia), to Martin and Cecilia (Mak) Sowinek. He served his country as an officer in the army and attained his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Technical Institute of Ljubliana. He married Andrea Zupanic in 1949 and came to the United States with her in 1957.
Martin and Andrea first settled in Peoria, Illinois. Martin initially worked at the State hospital there, and soon secured a position as engineer for Caterpillar Tractor Company. He worked successfully for decades on the Caterpillar proving grounds, in the company’s research division. While working for Caterpillar, Martin also earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
Martin and Andrea lived much of their working lives in Dunlap, Illinois, just north of Peoria. They were always active members of their church and the local German-American Society (DANK). Martin also was member of the Knights of Columbus. He and Andrea retired in 1989 and moved to Marco Island, which they had grown to love over the years as they vacationed there.
On Marco, Martin and Andrea both were very active members of the San Marco Catholic Church. Martin was a long-standing member of the Knights of Columbus. In recent years, he served as the Grand Knight of the local chapter.
Martin survived Andrea, who passed away six years ago, and his brother-in-law, Theodor Lukas. He is survived by his sister, Eva Lukas, who lives on the island and is a member of San Marco Church; his nephew Michael Lukas (Karen Porter) of Chicago; niece Maria Lukas (Culver Boldt) of Iowa City, Iowa; grandnieces Katherine Lukas and Mia Boldt; and grandnephew Adam Boldt. martin will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Avow Hospice and San Marco Catholic Church.
