Continue  [ ] was needed to return to the driveways of our love and children filled homes. 
- [ ] The cliff and the gooseneck across the street  brought exploration and outdoor activities all year round. Zig zagging the switch back paths to the bottom then climbing up again was exhilarating. 
- [ ] The basement of the Hahn home was a hobby filled room with Bob’s plane  making area and at one point, Dee and our mother, Mrs. Nemastil, made plastic flowers. Yes, melted plastic flowers.
- [ ] Four homes in a row were all Catholic families who sent their numerous children, 22 of them, to St. Francis grade school. High school choices and individual interests tugged the kids apart sending each into their own directions but filled with memories of the fun activities on the “Street”. Dee’s siblings, Bernie, Maureen and Raymond, were also part of the group for a short period. They loved being in the country plus helped Dee with the children and chores.
- [ ] The friendship of the mothers, Theresa and Dee, loosely kept everyone together. It is rare to have families still connected after 70 years. 
With the passing of Mr. Hahn, the closing of the “the street” as we remember it, is coming to an end. New people and children have replaced our memories with those of their own reshaping the ghosts of the past. The play, Our Town depicting life in the early 1900’s, comes to mind with many older and younger towns people filling the old cemetery on the hill. Each person left a legacy deep in the heart of those they left behind. “The Street” as we all remember it is a story of the 1950-80’s in the small town of Gates Mills. Mr. Hahn aka Bob to most, left a legacy on the “street” for all who lived in that era.

Ode to the Hahn’s

Moving to a fairly new street called Timberidge Trail in the late 1950’s brought 2 families living side by side raising 14 children in 2 households. The memories shared are numerous and vary according to the age of each one of us. As the oldest of the “gang” my role as babysitter rings true. 

Babysitting, Bobby, Kathy, Janeen and Laura, brought me into the house next door frequently as I babysat for $0.25 per hour. Running up the stairs to see if all were still tucked in their beds or tip toeing into the primary bedroom to check on a sleeping baby were just part of time spent next door. The small library was my sanctuary where I was able to watch tv alone and choose what ever I wanted and check out all Mrs. Hahn’s nursing books especially the anatomy and physiology books. These evenings were the first steps in my 40 year career in the nursing field that assisted in bringing a wonderful career and a nice income for my family of 5 children. The youngest, the only girl, following in my footsteps and those first inspired by Dee, also  became a nurse and finally a nurse practitioner with 4 children of her own. Family and having many children seems to have a pattern over the generations. 

Focusing on “the street” and all the activities of our youth fills pages of fun times. The following bullet presentation is a list of some memorable one:

- [ ] The pond was a gathering playground for all of us with ducks, white excrement, lost fishing hooks, bamboo fishing poles, and an occasional fall off the edge into murky water. Or it was just a simple place to sit and chit chat.
- [ ] The front and back yard with trees precisely   removed in order to fly radio airplanes with neighborhood kids sitting on the lawn waiting with anticipation to see who would win the dog fight or sadly crash their painstakingly made plane to the ground.
- [ ] The street brought bike rides to the top of Timberidge and Battles  road where little pedaling (continue 2nd post)

To all the Hahn family,

Just received the news about your dad passing away.

Trying to cope with the reality of how my life would have been if I hadn’t  had the opportunity of knowing your dad.  I would not be who I am today without his presence in my life.

Your dad gave me so many dreams and hopes. I was truly fortunate that I had the opportunity to live and learn so much from your dads’ thoughts, skills, dreams, kindness, and generosity. 

So many of us were brought together by your dads’ youthfulness spirit. The memories of all the activities that your dad organized and participated with us kids brings back the best memories. Playing three-a-strike softball, playing cut the pie during the first snow, playing capture the flag, going to my first real Browns football game, taking a trip to the Cleveland air show, visiting the shop, and seeing all of the machines, building my first model plane, shooting my first real 22 rifle down at the pond, rebuilding the Ford Ferguson tractor, stringing hundreds and hundreds of Christmas lights on the front bushes, helping me set up my photo dark room, sharing his stories of his flying days, looking up into the sky when a plane was flying over, encouraging me to learn how to fly, and one of best memories, experiencing my first real morning breakfast from the Roach Coach down at the shop.

Your dad was a great person, I just wanted to share my thoughts and gratitude.

Would appreciate the opportunity, if possible, to attend his memorial.

Dear Dee,
Remember how Bob and I loved our political  phone conversations.
Bob was a great man and loved by many. May your consolation be in the beautiful 66 years you had together and the knowledge he is now resting in God's peace.
