Dr. Alan Taylor Gorton

Dr. Alan Taylor Gorton, of Marietta, a metallurgist, business owner, published author and inventor of 3 patents in steel making, died July 11, 2014. He was 77. Born in Moose Lake, Minnesota, he was a graduate of the University of Minnesota where he received his doctorate in metallurgy. He worked for Atlantic Steel in Atlanta for over 22 years as Chief Metallurgist and recently worked as an independent consultant in the steel industry. He loved to travel, enjoyed playing tennis and cherished spending time with his family.

Dr. Gorton is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas B. and Lois LeMaster Gorton of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota; and his brother, Thomas Gorton of San Diego, California. Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Geraldine “Geri” Gorton; daughters, Christine Gorton of Marietta, Elizabeth and Mark Hancher of Suwanee, and Alison and Brent Mills of Johns Creek; grandchildren, Alexandra Mills, Amanda Mills, Laura Hancher, and A. J. Hancher; brother, George Gorton of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota; and sister Mary Loudin of New Bern, North Carolina.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 1:30 pm at Patterson’s Canton Hill. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:30 until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the charity of your choice or to the American Cancer Society.
