MATTHEWS, Allen Benton, 81, passed away on April 13, 2014 at his home in Marietta. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carol Matthews and two sons, Jeffrey Matthews of Athens, GA and Jonathan Drew Matthews (Mayumi) of Selma, AL. Allen had one grandchild, Sara, also from Selma. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Allen graduated from Drexel Institute in Philadelphia with a B.A. in Business Administration. After receiving his college degree, Allen enlisted in the armed forces and served his country as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Mr. Matthews was employed for many years at Hartwell Corporation in California as a District Manager. Upon retirement, he became employed by Kroger in Marietta. Once he retired from the grocery chain, Mr. Matthews enjoyed spending every morning with pals at the local coffee and bagel shop. A catered reception and visitation for Allen will be held at H.M. Patterson and Son in Marietta on May 23, 2014 from 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to American Cancer Society at cancer.org or National Wildlife Federation at nwf.org.
