Andrew T. Parsons, age 50, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, September 24, 2016 in Marietta, GA. He was born November 25, 1965, in Bainbridge, GA to Linda (Gibson) Parsons and the late Henry “Ted” Parsons. He graduated from Escambia High School in Atmore, AL in 1983. Drew was also a proud graduate of the University of Alabama.
A Celebration of Life and funeral service will be held Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 10:30 am at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, GA.
“Drew” loved his godly parents and his upbringing with his younger brother, Michael. An avid baseball player, Drew pitched all through high school and his first two years in college. His dad had a bet with him in high school that if he pitched a no-hitter, the reward would be a new car. During the final game, his dad started sweating in the bottom of the 7th inning of a no-hitter, but a young man (who was later drafted to the pros) came up to bat and hit a home run. Big Orange (a 1976 Buick Skyhawk) remained his faithful car even through college.
Drew married Joan Vonderhaar on May 25, 1991 in Camden, OH. They shared 26 years of an incredible marriage. His pride and joy were his four children, Nate, Grant, Zach and Claire. Drew taught his sons his love of baseball and Alabama football. He adored his daughter and was faithful every year to dance the night away at the father/daughter banquet. Drew’s favorite thing in the world was spending time with his family. He spent countless hours coaching and cheering on his kids in their various sports. He enjoyed playing guitar as well as working on home remodeling projects, a hobby that both Drew and Joan shared. He was a faithful friend to many and was a music lover.
Anyone who knew Drew well would quickly describe him as having a passion for Christ. Drew was on staff with Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) for 26 years. He and his family lived in Auburn, AL, Hattiesburg, MS, Budapest, Hungary and Marietta, GA. His desire was to know the Lord and make him known. He memorized large portions of scriptures. His journal is full of prayers for those family members and friends who do not know the Lord. His favorite years of ministry were spent with Story Runners, a division of Cru whose primary goal was to communicate the Gospel to unreached people groups. His love for Jesus Christ was evident in all he said and did. With great certainty, Drew was greeted with the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant,” by his precious Savior.
It is only fitting that this tribute would end with the one question that Drew would ask of you: If you were to die today, would you spend eternity with God? Please honor Drew by contemplating this question.
In lieu of flowers gifts may be sent to Parsons Children College Donation Fund at Wells Fargo. Checks may be sent to Wells Fargo, 3601 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta, GA 30066. Another option to honor Drew is to give to unreached people groups in India: http://give.cru.org/0903519.
