Augustus Hydrick Bolen Jr., lovingly known as Gus, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025, at the age of 82 in Marietta, Georgia. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, on October 2, 1942, Gus was the cherished son of the late Mr. Augustus Hydrick Bolen, Sr. and Mrs. Eula Vaughn Cudd.
Gus is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Flora Godwin Bolen; his beloved daughters, Dawn Andrel and her husband Jim Pasternak, Sonja Smith and her husband Doug Smith; and his treasured grandson, Justin Smith. He was a family man through and through, finding his greatest joy in time spent with his loved ones—whether on a family trip, a quiet day at home, or cheering on his Clemson Tigers.
A proud graduate of Clemson University, Gus earned his degree in Electrical Engineering before embarking on a remarkable 44-year career with Georgia Power. His dedication, integrity, and work ethic left a lasting impression on his colleagues and the community he served.
Gus’s generous spirit extended far beyond his professional life. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club, a member of Georgia Power Ambassadors group, always eager to lend a hand to those in need, and a passionate supporter of youth programs such as Math Counts with Georgia Society of Professional Engineers. His commitment to service and helping others was a guiding light to all who knew him.
A man of faith, Gus was a dedicated member of Mars Hill Presbyterian Church, where he found fellowship and purpose.
