Bruce “Goose” Robert Heim, 55, went to be with the Savior he loved on the afternoon of Sunday May 6th, 2012. He passed at his home in Roswell, Georgia from what is believed to be heart related issues while playing hymns on his piano.
Bruce was born on January 16th, 1957 in Hagerstown, Maryland the fourth son of William G. and Bess J. Heim. He is survived by his father and siblings William F. Heim, Brad W. Heim and Bonnie J. Thomas. He is predeceased by his mother and brother Barry J. Heim. He graduated in 1975 from Chenango Valley High School in Binghamton, New York where he excelled in track and cross country.
Bruce went on to attend Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida where he majored in political science, was a part of the ROTC and, most importantly, met his wife Karen Applegate. Upon graduation in 1979, Bruce became a member of the Marine Corps with which he served 6 years as an active duty member and 14 years in the reserves. He was a Huey helicopter pilot and during this time received his call sign and popular nickname “Goose”. Goose served in the first Persian Gulf War and retired with the rank of major.
He married Karen A. Heim on May 24th, 1981. They had two kids in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Rachael J. Heim and Eric W. Heim. After moving to Binghamton, New York, they had Amanda J. Heim and Sarah A. Heim. Goose is survived by his wife and four kids. He moved his family to the metro Atlanta area in 1994, where he worked as a part of many entrepreneurial businesses before becoming a small business owner in 2004.
Goose’s legacy is that of a loving husband and greatly involved father. He had a wide network of friends, enjoyed hosting annual parties a couple times a year and was a quick responder in people’s times of need. His interest in sports led him to be a lifelong runner, youth sports coach, basketball referee and faithful Green Bay Packers fan. Over the past decade and a half, his greatest passion became his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He would spend most mornings drinking coffee, studying the Bible and reading the writings of what he and his family called “old dead theologians”. He is presently more alive than ever, having previously only seen his Savior dimly, he is now in Jesus’ presence in full.
A celebration service of Goose’s life will be held in the sanctuary of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church at 11 AM Saturday May 12th, 2012, with a visitation starting at 9 AM that morning and a reception following the service.
