Christopher Hunger Petras, age 59, of Cleveland, Georgia, passed away on July 22, 2010 while visiting family in Rocky Point, New York. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 3, 1950 he was the son of the late Martin & Irmgard Petras. Chris graduated from John Marshall High School in 1968 and obtained a degree in mathematics from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio. Chris and his soul mate Bonnie met in college in 1970 and within one month were married. Their marriage was in short “a true love story”. They never left each others side for over 40 years. They moved to Atlanta in 1972 where Chris taught mathematics at Woodward Academy for a short time. Chris was an entrepreneur who started several successful businesses including Tiffin Tile. As a highly skilled craftsman he often shared his creative talents with family and friends. His lust for life was demonstrated in his interaction with his children and his grandchildren. His greatest legacy was his innate ability to show compassion and love to everyone who came in contact with him. He was the consummate companion and great friend to many. Chris shaped many young men’s lives as the coach of multiple sports teams for his children as they grew up. A sportsman in his youth, Chris was a dual sport athlete at Heidelberg College where he won many awards including OAC Champion in varsity wrestling and he was also a two year letterman for varsity football. In his formative years, he continued to display his athletic prowess by becoming an avid golfer. In 1998, Chris realized a lifelong dream when he broke ground on a mountain house in Cleveland, Georgia. Over a two year period Chris designed and built the “Barnhouse” with the help of his sons. Bonnie still lives in the Barnhouse, and the home has become a physical representation of his creative talents.
Chris is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his two sons, Ross and Joey; his daughters-in-law Kristen M. and Kristen H.; and his four grandchildren Halen, Brayden, Kiley and Easton. He is also survived by his sister Sue and his two brothers Marty and Chuck.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 14 at the H.M. Patterson & Son Canton Hill funeral home. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:45 PM on the same day at the funeral home.
