

Mr. Clifford (Chick) Allen Webb, Jr, age 90, passed away on October 11, 2012 in Atlanta after a brief illness. He was born on May 13, 1922 in Birmingham, AL and raised in Augusta, GA, graduating from Richmond Academy. He attended Clemson University until his junior year when his class was called to serve in WWII. Because of the hearing loss he had as a result of measles at age 4, he was unable to join them although he wanted to very badly. He transferred to Auburn University where he was a member of ATO Fraternity and graduated with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering in 1944. It was at Auburn where he met his wife of 63 years, Elaine H. Webb, who predeceased him in 2009. Upon graduation he began his career in Chemical Engineering working for Union Camp in Savannah, GA in the Mill Technical Department where he worked for 27 years. It was in Savannah he and his wife raised their three daughters. He was very active in First Christian Church, serving as Elder, Sunday School Teacher, various department chairs and Chairman of the Board. He was also active in politics in Savannah, ultimately serving as Chairman of the Chatham Republican Party in the early 70’s. He moved to Atlanta to work for EPA for a short time before accepting a job as Environmental Manager for SMEPA in Hattiesburg, MS, retiring in 1989. He and his wife resided in Hattiesburg for 30 years, becoming very active in First Presbyterian Church, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, an Elder and later honored as an Elder Emeritus. He loved playing golf, traveling and playing bridge, was an accomplished wood worker and was an avid Auburn fan. In 2006, they moved to Atlanta to be closer to their children.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his parents Clifford A. Webb Sr. and Sadie Collier Webb, and a son-in-law James S. DuPre, Jr. of Charlotte, NC. Survivors include his daughters: Charlotte W. (Luther) Bacon, Pembroke, GA; Katherine W. (Earl) Crew, Savannah, GA and Louise W. (Rob) Butts, Marietta, GA, grandsons, Allen E. Butts of Ft. Collins, CO and David F. Butts of Marietta, GA and several cousins.
A funeral Service will be Monday, October 15, 2012 at 12:00 pm at H.M. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, Canton Hill Chapel, Marietta, GA with visitation one hour before the service. Burial will take place on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 1 pm at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta, GA.
