Clinton Eugene Merritt, Sr. 94 passed away April 16, 2023. A longtime resident of Smyrna, GA, Clinton is survived by his wife of 72 years, Nancy Jean Merritt, his son, Clinton Eugene Merritt, Jr. ( Lynn) of Temple, daughter Sharon Elaine Bracegirdle (James) of Canton, and son, Randall Roy Merritt of Marietta; 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and a great-great grandson.
Clinton enjoyed his family, traveling, camping and fishing. He never met a stranger or neglected to give helpful advice and support to those who needed it. Clinton gave unconditional love to all those around him. He was passionate about restoring and driving vintage automobiles, including a Ford Model A.
Clinton served in the US Navy for 5 years during the Korean Conflict as an aircraft electronics technician. He served as aircrew on Navy patrol aircraft and had several harrowing experiences. In one case, Clinton saved his aircrew when he alerted the pilot who had accidentally overflown the island of Guam. The aircraft turned around and landed with fuel tanks almost empty.
Clinton retired as an engineer from Lockheed Martin after 30 years of service and enjoyed an amazing 34 years of retirement. Clinton was an entrepreneur and owned and operated several small businesses, including at one point, a video game room and a successful vending business.
We will miss his humor, kindness and good counsel. Truly one of a kind.
