Daphne Mae Brown, age 84, of Powder Springs, Georgia passed away on Friday, March 7, 2025. She was born Daphne May Bryce on April 16, 1940, to Edith Blanche Bryce and Ehud Alexander Bryce in Crofts Hill, Jamaica West Indies.
As a child, Daphne, the youngest of seven siblings, was an excellent reader and the pride of her father. He openly shared her talents with people in the community. At age 10, she was sent to boarding high school at Clarendon College in Chapelton, about an hour from home. There Daphne showed great promise as a student.
Soon after Daphne enrolled at Clarendon College, she received the news that her father Ehud passed away from complications of being thrown by his horse. Daphne was devastated at the loss of her father, and, after his death, her mother Edith had no way to continue paying for her education. Daphne was fortunate to have what would be the first of many benefactors who would provide the financial support required to complete her education, her sister, Ernetia, being one of them.
Clarendon College marked the beginning of her Spanish teaching career. While serving there in the Alumni Association, she met Clarence Theodore Brown, a fellow alum. The two quickly fell in love and, on July 31, 1965, they were married. Clarence and Daphne’s love never wavered as they were married for almost 60 years.
Daphne taught Spanish at St Andrew High School and Immaculate High School in Jamaica and in various schools in the United States over 40 years. Not only did she teach Spanish, but she was very fluent in speaking it as well. Daphne made her teaching career all about her students, some of whom she stayed in contact with over the years as they became good friends.
Daphne was very talented. She made whatever was needed whether it be clothing for herself and her family, food or interior décor. Even after teaching, she always had a servant’s heart, serving others in her church Stephens’ Ministry, which helped feed and support others in their time of need. She never let her education go to waste. When she moved to Georgia, she continued to teach adult learners of English at McEachern Methodist Church.
When she was not helping others, Daphne loved to travel. She traveled the world, from South America to Singapore. Daphne was full of love and laughter. She will always be best known as a teacher, wife, mother, grandmother, friend and counselor to all that knew her. Her legacy will always live on through the love she showed each person who had the privilege to meet her.
Daphne is survived by her loving husband; Clarence, her three daughters; Faith, Kathryn and Suzette, her three grandchildren, Mark, Justin and Kayla, nieces and nephews and an unending list of friends.
