

ROY, Doreen Pickthorne, 87 of Marietta passed away on March 1, 2011. Born February 29, 1924 in Ottawa, Canada, she is preceded in death by her parents William Osborne and Ella Moore Pickthorne and her brother Blair Pickthorne. She was a loving wife and mother who will be missed by her husband of 64 years, Jay Van Roy and her children, daughter Kathleen Davies of Jasper, son Bruce W. and Teresa Roy, daughter Debbie Baker all from Marietta, and son Robert and Susan Roy of Dublin, CA. She had three grandsons, Michael Roy of Honolulu, Hi and Eric and Troy Baker of Marietta. Her sisters, Shirley Elliott of Kingston, Ontario, Canada and Marilyn Otero of Madrid, Spain and brother Bill Pickthorne of Ottawa, Canada. After serving in the Canadian Women’s Army during WWII, she went on to the Pittsburg Art Institute where she met her husband. After graduation they settled in Florida where she raised her children and became President of the Junior Women’s Club. The family moved to Marietta in 1959 and Doreen later became an Editorial Columnist for the AJC and the San Francisco Chronicle. She had feature articles in Better Homes & Garden and Family Circle. She worked in Advertising at Tucker Wayne of Atlanta and became a published author. She was a creative and accomplished woman who had a love of life and adventure. She will be truly missed by her family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Juvenile Diabetic Foundation. The family will receive friends from 1 pm on Tuesday March 8 followed by the memorial service which will be held at 2 pm at H.M. Patterson and Sons, Canton Hill Chapel.
