Jim's passion for music began early, leading him to earn a degree in Sacred Music from Oklahoma Baptist University and a Master’s degree from Southern Seminary. His calling as a musician started in high school and continued throughout his life, taking him from churches in Oklahoma to the vibrant musical communities of New York City. He shared his extraordinary talents as a choirmaster, organist, and educator, impacting countless students and congregations. His career included years as a senior music editor for Macmillan Publishing and teaching at Berkeley-Carroll and Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He was also the beloved choirmaster and organist at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn Heights before moving to Atlanta. There, he continued his love of education and technology, teaching computer science at The Lovett School and serving as the organist at several churches including: Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church, Rock Springs Presbyterian Church, and most recently - Northminster Presbyterian Church.
Beyond music and teaching, Jim was a man of many interests. He found joy in his HAM radios and emergency response work, played French horn in the Atlanta Concert Band, and even took on the challenge of learning new instruments like the bagpipes. His curiosity and love for technology kept him engaged and always learning. He was proud of his family and enjoyed spending time with his cats and his beloved dog, Lucy.
Jim touched the lives of so many with his kindness, talent, and unwavering dedication. His music, mentorship, and warm spirit will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Susan, and his dear sister, Carolyn. He leaves behind his beloved children: Jennifer (Chad), James (Lee), John (Janine), and Elizabeth (Justin). Jim was a proud grandfather to Drew (Kierson), Tyler, Meredith (David), Grace, Katie (Zach), Isabelle, David, Rodrigo, Ryan (Sierra), and Jerad (Brie).
