Kyle was like an older brother to me, and I have only the best memories with him.  He always treated me with a rare kindness that made me feel welcome in any situation.  Growing up just across the street and only three years apart, I was lucky to share so many childhood experiences with him -  including the Hampton Lake Hockey League, where we were both scrappy role players and experts in defending Dylan.

Our friendship felt closest during our late teen years, when visits to the Sim basement were a regular occurrence. I will always cherish those conversations down there, filled with music, theatre, books, relationships, and plenty of laughter.  Amidst all the neighborhood shenanigans, Kyle brought a calming and thoughtful presence that I will greatly miss.

After college, I ended up following Kyle to New York, where we shared a few wholesome nights out together in Manhattan and Brooklyn.  Even though our adult lives weren’t as intertwined as they were when we were kids, the closeness with Kyle never faded.

One of my favorite recent memories was when he made a guest appearance at a Men’s Club gathering and delivered an incredible speech about the history of comics. I remember being blown away and feeling so proud of him. From that day on, I thought he would have made an amazing teacher.

I consider myself truly fortunate to have known such an extraordinary and loving person.

I will always remember my conversations with Kyle about movies and music.  I remember one night, sitting out on the deck, a circle of us, giving our top 3 movies of all time and why they are our favorites. Kyle was so interested to learn about movies he had not seen; he asked questions, dug in.  Really fun.  Regarding music, Kyle and I discussed the great Joni Mitchell.  Kyle was interested to learn more about Joni.  Kyle had a great and deep grasp of art, literature, paintings, music.   I will also remember every time over at the Sims when Kyle was present.  Excellent memories!

I was heartsick to hear of Kyle's passing - and was unable to attend the celebration of his life... but KNOWING Kyle WAS a sort of celebration. He was a very unique individual - and as his former teacher, I was humbled and thrilled that he kept in touch for nearly 20 years after graduation. We had many wonderful moments of sympatico when he was in high school - and terrific insightful conversations afterwards.  I will NEVER forget simultaneously bursting into Sondheim duets with him during set construction sessions at Walton. He was vibrant, hilarious, and wise beyond his years. It was a pleasure and a burst of enlightenment to know Kyle. Whatever the afterlife holds, he is there - making angels laugh. Bless you, dear Kyle.

I wasn’t able to make it today, but I thought I’d share a memory. I fondly remember plenty of nights out on the back patio hanging with Kyle and his buddies. After party if you will. My original ambition was film, and Kyle had such a great knowledge and collection of abstract, underrated movies we’d watch, sometimes until the sun came up. Deep intellectual discussions about the nature of the universe. Kyle was a very bright guy, and he’d always somehow manage to find a way to lighten the mood and make me laugh despite the often heavy subject matter. Other nights, he would come out of left field with some gadget or instrument and we’d play around making music. Always loved that offbeat creativity to him. He was always welcoming and kind and he always had an open ear for any issue or phase ya might be going through. Usually with some insightful guidance that I’d not even considered beforehand. He had a unique perspective on everything. That was over a decade ago, but he still left an impression on me. May he rest in peace.

Dear Uncle Harvey and the Sim Family,

Dear Sim Family:
Our hearts ache over your loss. Know that we hold you close in our thoughts & prayers. We followed Kyle's Forgibeness posts on Instagram. They were fascinating to read. His depth of knowledge about graphic novels & comix and the writers was impressive. Although such a brief time, we were thankful he shared his genius and creative writing with all of us. We developed a new appreciation for that genre of literature.
