L. Douglas Vaughn, age 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 21 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born in 1943 in Canton, Georgia. He grew up in Jasper, Georgia and attended Pickens County High School where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Teresa “Tracy” James Townsend. After high school, Doug attended Southern Polytechnic Institute where he received his Engineering degree and worked at Lockheed Martin. He soon went on to the Georgia Institute of Technology where he received his Industrial Management degree. After Georgia Tech, he began work at Georgia Power Company, where he spent 35 years, retiring in 2005.
Doug was funny, kind, and a dear friend to so many people. Those who knew him all had a funny story or had picked up a funny saying from him. He loved a good burger, a good round of golf, and a good joke.
He was a lifelong Georgia Tech fan, rarely missing a home football game since becoming a season ticket holder in 1970. Sitting right beside him at most games was his son, Chris, whom he loved so dearly and who inherited his passion for the Yellow Jackets.
By all measures, he had a full and happy life. He and Tracy enjoyed lots of time with friends, were able to travel, and got to see Georgia Tech win a national championship in football. He would say his life was made fuller by his grandchildren. He delighted in taking them on outings and doing a little light-hearted teasing.
Doug is survived by his wife of 60 years, Tracy, their son Christopher (Angie), and his grandchildren, Michael, and Lilah Rose. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jewell Bryant, and his grandmother, Jeanettie Hammontree.
A celebration of life will be held at Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home, located at 2000 Cobb Parkway SE in Marietta, Georgia, on Saturday, February 3 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
