Luther W. Jones

Luther William Jones of Marietta died on Monday, August 22, 2011. He was born in Richmond County Georgia on June 20, 1919. As a young man, he worked for the CCA and eventually joined the United States Marine Corp., serving in the South Pacific in WWII and called back to duty during the Korean Conflict. Later he worked for the United States Post Office and retired from there in 1980. As an avid gardener he enjoyed growing vegetables for family and to share with his Forest Park neighborhood. Braves’ baseball was a source of pleasure from the team’s early days in Atlanta. Their vacation home in Panama City Beach, FL was the scene of many happy times for him and wife Kathy. He was a gregarious and optimistic man and was never too busy to stop for a chat and a joke with friends or family. Loving young people, he was a scoutmaster and, in retirement, spent time reading to children in the local elementary school. He was an active member of Jones Memorial UMC for many years. Later, upon moving to Marietta, he was a devoted member of Mt. Bethel UMC. His many friends in his Sunday school class there enriched his last years as did his wonderful neighbors in the Shadowbrook neighborhood. He was predeceased by his son E. Alan Jones, three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kathleen J. Jones; a son, Joe Jones and wife June, of Waynesboro, GA; daughter-in-law Jan Jones of Hephzibah, GA; step-daughter, Jackie Poole and husband Jerry of Marietta; stepson Frank Collins of Memphis,TN ; brother John T. Jones and wife Ann of Atlanta; 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at H.M. Patterson, Canton Hill on Thursday, August 25th at 2:00 pm with visitation on Wednesday, August 24th, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Graveside services will follow at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs.
