Born in Michigan to the late Paul Clayton Shank and her beloved mother, Ellinor Louise Lindberg, Maren lived a life marked by curiosity, creativity, and compassion. She had a deep appreciation for the natural world—especially bird watching and gardening—which brought her joy and peace throughout her life. A gifted seamstress and talented baker, Maren loved sharing her creations with family and friends, always offering comfort and warmth through her many talents.
Maren enjoyed a long and successful career as a computer programmer, working at IBM, E3, and UPS. Known for her sharp intellect and calm problem-solving spirit, she made a lasting impact in her field and among her colleagues. Even in retirement, she stayed active—spending time outdoors, playing Pokémon Go, and connecting with others in joyful, unexpected ways.
Her heart for service extended far beyond her profession. Maren participated in multiple mission trips overseas, selflessly offering her time, skills, and compassion to communities in need. She lived a life grounded in purpose, always striving to help others.
Maren faced a long and difficult battle with breast cancer, first diagnosed in 2017 and returning in 2021. In 2024, the disease metastasized to her brain, spine, lungs, blood, and liver. She endured a double mastectomy, spinal surgery, chemotherapy medication, ten rounds of whole brain radiation, and approximately eight rounds of IV chemotherapy. Through it all, Maren never once complained. Her strength, grace, and unshakable spirit were an inspiration to everyone around her. She was, in every sense, a fighter.
Maren is lovingly remembered by her mother, Ellie Lindberg (91); her siblings, Paul Shank and Jean Shank; her daughters, Cara Vick and Madison V.; her son-in-law, James V.; and her cherished granddaughter, Abigail V. She also leaves behind countless friends and extended family who will miss her deeply.
A celebration of Maren’s life will be held on Saturday, August 23rd, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at H.M. Patterson & Son – Canton Hill Chapel, where all who knew and loved her are invited to gather in her memory.
Maren’s life was a beautiful reflection of kindness, intellect, resilience, and generosity. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
