Mary Ruth Drake Cauthorn

She was born in the Jordonia community of Davidson County, Tennessee, on September 16, 1922. Mary Ruth graduated from Cumberland High School and received her Nursing Degree from St. Thomas School of Nursing in Nashville, Tennessee.

Thereafter she worked as a Public Health Nurse in Nashville, Tennessee until she was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the U. S. Army Nurse Corps, assigned to Lawson General Military Hospital located in Chamblee, Georgia. While serving at Lawson General she met her future husband, Tom Cauthorn to whom she was married until his death in 2007.

After World War II, Mary Ruth Drake Cauthorn and her family located to Cobb County where she worked first for the Cobb County Schools as Dietician at East Side Elementary School and later worked for many years as a Public Health Nurse and Supervisor with the Cobb County Health Department. After retirement, she was nominated by the Cobb County Commission as a member of the Cobb County Board of Health, where she served from 1984 until 1997. In addition to her service in retirement as a Board of Health member, she was active in Cobb Senior Services and served as a member of the Cobb Senior Services Council.

She was a member for many years of the John Knox Presbyterian Church and later a devoted member of Marietta’s First United Methodist Church where she thoroughly enjoyed the choir and music. Mary Ruth had a passion for her seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her two sons, Tom and his wife Lulu and Drake and his wife Roxanne. Surviving grandchildren are Wick Cauthorn, Marijane Sanders, Ed Cauthorn, Lauren McCombe, Will Cauthorn, Peter Cauthorn, and Samantha Cauthorn. Surviving great grandchildren are Cameron McCombe, Ella McCombe, Nora Ruth Sanders, Garnett Sanders, Betty Drake Cauthorn, and Charlie McCombe. Mary Ruth Drake Cauthorn was the last survivor of ten siblings.

Visitation is Monday, February 26 from 5:00 p.m. til 7:00 p.m. at H.M. Patterson Canton Hill. Services are Tuesday, February 27 at 11:00 a.m. at H.M. Patterson Canton Hill Chapel. Internment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the family plot in West View Cemetery.
