Mary was born on May 7, 1936, in Neenah, Wisconsin, to the late Donald Henry Severson and Florence J. Thomsen Severson. After graduating from Neenah High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where she was a proud member of Kappa Delta Sorority.
In 1958, Mary married Raymond Lewis, a mechanical engineer with Kimberly-Clark Corporation. Together, they raised three children while moving across the country before settling in East Cobb, Georgia, in 1989.
Mary was a devoted stay-at-home mother who managed her home with grace and dedication. She was deeply involved in her community and church through volunteer work. An adventurer at heart, Mary embraced running, backpacking, and serving as a Girl Scout leader. She especially loved traveling, often participating in the Road Scholar program. Her artistic talents flourished through wall hangings and paintings inspired by her journeys. Recognizing a need, she volunteered to teach art at the local elementary school, enriching children’s education where art was not part of the curriculum.
Mary enjoyed reading cozy mysteries, watching British comedies, and knitting unique sweater designs, passions she pursued with enthusiasm throughout her life.
She is survived by her loving husband, Raymond Lewis; children Laurie Tonian, Sara Underwood, and Christopher Lewis; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A family memorial dinner will be held to celebrate Mary’s life.
