Nancy Vogt Wyer, 94, died Friday, December 22nd in her residence at Sterling Estates of East Cobb in Marietta, GA. She was born Nancy Bohart Vogt on October 1, 1929 in Stanberry, MO to Arlis and Marguerite Vogt. Nancy attended Wells College in Aurora, NY and graduated from the University of Nebraska. She also received a masters degree in public law and government from Columbia University in New York.
Nancy is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, the Rev. George William Wyer, a retired Episcopalian priest; her three daughters, Lisa Valentine Wyer of Croton-on Hudson, NY, Penelope Wyer Barrow of Raleigh, NC, and Jennifer Wyer Bull of Marietta, GA and three grandchildren. Her son, Ensign Christopher DeMoss Wyer, USN died previously in an accident in 1979.
A memorial service will be held at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church in Marietta, GA at 5 PM on December 31st. She will be buried at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ivy, VA.
Nancy was a talented pianist. Sterling residents will remember hearing her playing Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy up until the last weeks of her life. Nancy was also very active in the Episcopal church and taught piano for many years at St. Paul’s in Ivy, VA where her husband was rector from 1974 to his retirement in 1994. She and George traveled all around the world and delighted in experiencing other cultures. They were passionate about their pets, most especially the standard poodles which were a big part of their family over the years: Radi, Noah, Aslan, Clyde, and Zeke. Outspoken about women’s rights, she had hoped to live to see the first woman president.
Nancy will be remembered for her love of music, her devotion to her family, and her wonderful exuberance for life.
As she liked to say, “It’s been a whee of a ride.”
