Susan was born in Miami, Florida, the daughter of Charles Groover Hodges Jr. and Nell Jones Hodges. She nurtured a lifelong commitment to care, graduating from Georgia State University with a nursing degree and dedicating her professional life to healing others. She served with compassion at Eye Physicians & Surgeons and also answered the call to serve her country through the U.S. Navy Reserve, for over 20 years.
In 1981, Susan met her soulmate, John Zdencanovic, at work, and their union blossomed into 44 beautiful years of marriage. Their life together was rich with laughter, love, and devotion to family.
A gifted gardener, Susan delighted in starting seeds each winter and watching them grow through the fall. Her home and garden were living reflections of her gentle, nurturing spirit. She opened her heart to all creatures big and small, and her love for animals was boundless.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Nell Hodges, and her brother, Charles Groover Hodges III.
She is survived by her loving husband, John Zdencanovic; sons, Ben and Tim Zdencanovic; granddaughter, Penelope Lee Zdencanovic; sister, Beverly Hodges Kitchin; and brothers, George Hodges and Richard Hodges.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Susan’s memory to the Atlanta Humane Society (atlantahumane.org), in recognition of her lifelong compassion for animals.
A gathering to Celebrate the Life of Mrs. Susan Zdencanovic will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, between the hours of 4:00pm and 6:00pm, with a prayer service held at 4:30pm at HM Patterson Canton Hill Chapel, 1157 Old Canton Rd, Marietta, GA 30068.
