

Walter was born to the late Walter E. Chambers, Jr. and Esther Marie Connelly Chambers in Philadelphia, PA on May 11, 1924. He graduated from Roxborough High School, Class of 1942 and was soon drafted into the U.S. Army, which deployed him in October 1943 as a Rifleman in the North African campaign. On January 21, 1944, he was seriously wounded by a bullet that penetrated his arm while scaling a cliff after crossing the Rapido River during the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1945 after having been decorated with the Purple Heart Metal, the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars.
After his army service, Walter entered Ursinus College on the GI Bill and received his B.A Degree, Class of 1949. While at Ursinus, Walter met and became engaged to the love of his life, Alice Lillian Lachman, also of Philadelphia. They were married at Bala Cynwyd Methodist Church on November 4, 1950 and remained so until Alice died on June 18, 2015. After living in the Philadelphia area, they moved to Sherborn, MA in 1967 and to Sandy Springs GA in 1971.
After college, Walter pursued a successful career in sales and sales management in the areas of floor coverings and, then, of packaging, from which he retired very reluctantly in 2002 at age 79.
Walter is survived his son, Charles Chambers of Athens GA; his daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and William Pharr of Buckhead GA; Marjorie and David McKenna of Marietta GA; and his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Lisa Chambers of Johns Creek GA. He is also survived by grandchildren, Leah Pharr, John Pharr, Charles McKenna, Peter McKenna, Alison Chambers, Anna Chambers and Thomas Chambers; sister, Esther Chambers Adams; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Edith and Peter Munger and sister-in-law, Marjorie Chandler, all of West Chester PA. Walter was predeceased by his wife, Alice, and two grandchildren, W. Samuel Pharr, Jr. and Thomas Pharr. He had nine nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Sterling Estates, 4220 Lower Roswell Rd, Marietta, GA 30068 at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 19, 2018 in the Legacy Room.
