Bill, 

On this, the anniversary of your passing, I thought you'd be happy to know that our Eagles have all come home to roost. They gathered around one another for support at your celebration of life, and now  get together most Fridays for game nights at the Podaiskys. Your legacy lives on. 

As a side note, I don't hold out  much hope that any of them will meet partners at this rate. Perhaps you can work on that next.

Scoutmaster Deakins meant a great deal in my life and as an Eagle with a scout of my own now I can truly say I was blessed to learn so much from him.  He embodied scouts, virtue, and character.  He was always prepared, and on my first heavily rainy trip where I tripped and broke my glasses, had a kit and spare parts to get me through the weekend.  I am saddened to hear of his passing and wish his family all the best in their time of need.

Bill, Mr. Deakins, was a constant figure in Troop 435, leading years before my son joined and continuing years afterward.  He made me feel welcome as a participating parent from the start – as he did all parents.  What I remember most about Bill is his teaching by example, whether tying a bowline with one hand, cooking his own steak & potatoes in a skillet over a fire for dinner, planning something warm for the scouts to eat before bed after setting up camp on a cold night, helping with kindness.  He was always first to volunteer for Eagle Boards of Review when I was looking for the “three adults” required. Thanks, Bill, for your example and support.

Celebrating a life well-lived with the Deakins family!  Sweet memories of Bill, Linda, Brian, and Daniel.  There was never anyone as timeless, gentle, and kind as Bill.  I'm delighted that Bill shared his wisdom, wit, and talent with countless individuals equal to as many stars in the heavens! **  Now, Bill is in Heaven with his dad, Dick, and other precious family members. 

Linda and family, having traveled this road of immeasurable loss before, I wish you peace as joy comes in the morning.  

While I was only in your life for 20 years, there are so many fond memories of meals around Irene's kitchen table, family trips to WVa, and even a rafting trip in which I was the first to discover a hole in the raft moving us swiftly down the river.  Thank goodness we made it to the riverbank and a new raft was deployed.  However, I refused to continue the journey which angered the guide and my raft mates. Oh my!!! 

 Thank you again for the good times.  See you in Heaven Bill.

Mr. Deakins, as the boys knew him, was a good friend to Troop 435. He provided his time, guidance, culinary skills, enthusiasm for the outdoors, and many stories of a life-long love of the Scouts and family. Under the gruff exterior was a man dedicated to helping the boys of Troop 435 grow into men of character. Personally, I enjoyed chatting with Bill when the boys were winding down for the evening. His observations were well thought out and insightful. Personally, I know that my son has directly benefited from Bill’s wisdom and advice throughout my son’s Scouting journey.  

Rest In Peace my friend- your life touched so many people who will continue to carry on your memory and your continual contributions to their journeys in life.  I always knew that every Scout and every adult had a true friend that they could rely on when camping. Our dinners together were always refreshing and filled with your stories and musings of life, family, Scouts, and how you would fix things if you were king. I miss you - rest in peace.

Prayers and condolences for the family of Bill,he was kind,caring and a sweet person he will be missed.

Linda, I was saddened to hear this.
My deepest condolences to you and the family.

So sorry to hear about Bill.  We worked together at Chastain. 
Bill was also talking what he was planning next for his Boy Scouts. 
Bill was the first to check with everyone about where we were going for lunch. Bill liked to practice his golf skills during lunch break. We would send our coop for food and set up a cup somewhere in the office.  My deepest sympathy to Linda and rest of family.



I too am saddened to hear that Bill has passed away. My sincere condolences to Linda and the rest of the family. 

I worked with Bill for a time in Outside Plant Engineering at BellSouth. It was my first job out of college, and he was a part of the great camaraderie in that office and always helpful.  He recruited my husband and me to play tennis out of his and Linda's wonderful neighborhood, and we enjoyed that for many years.

I have many fond memories of conversations with Bill in the 7-8 years of working with him.  Always good for a laugh and loved his Boy Scout stories....   Thoughts and prayers for Linda and the rest of the family...

I am deeply saddened by the news of Bill's passing.  I worked alongside Bill while at Bellsouth/ AT&T as an engineer and always appreciated the conversations and memories of our time there.   For Bill's family I am wishing you peace to bring comfort and the courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever warm your hearts.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Deakins (Bill) since 2012, when my son, Jacob Sessions, crossed over from Pack 1800 to Troop 435. Bill dedicated most of his life to Scouting, and the principals that BSA has instilled in the millions of boys who have grown into wonderful young men. 

We all knew Bill could be a curmudgeon, but as an Adult Leader with Troop 435, I saw first hand how much he cared about our Scouts. He worked tirelessly to help each one work on their merit badges, and made sure the requirements were done by the book. He took time out of his busy schedule and away from his own family to attend weekly meetings, go on countless camping trips, supervise summer camp nearly every year, and oversaw numerous service projects – including those for the East Cobb UMC, that chartered Troop 435. 

Bill loved the National Scout Jamboree and went nearly every four years. His favorite thing about Jamboree, next to the spirit of the event itself, was trading patches with other Troops. He even made a display of all the patches he had collected over the years. He was loved respected by all who knew him. Jacob thought of Bill as his mentor, and at his Eagle ceremony he awarded him with a mentor pin, for all the advice and counsel he bestowed upon him. He also presented him with a Norman Rockwell framed print of a Boy Scout and his leader. 

We will miss Bill more than words can say, and our hearts go out to 
his family. 


We have never met a more dedicated Boy Scout Leader. Bill was one of a kind. Troop 435 will miss him greatly.
Bill loved his wife and family. We hope you know of the joy he brought into others lives.

Troop   435 Summer Camp 2006. 

Bill loved going to summer camps. Here are the Scouts from Summer Camp 2006.  They learned so much from Bill and because of Bill we have so many wonderful men out there doing good things for their communities.  

Williams Deakins was the iconic figure of Troop 435. He was there every Monday night meetings ... rain, hail or snow. His commitment and support for scouting and to the Scouts of Troop 435 will be missed. He was a role model for all Scouters in Troop 435. 

Bill Deakins made a difference in the lives of so many people. He was a great scouter always allowing boys to to learn and lead with plenty of encouragement. Always a great camp partner.  He will be missed. RIP Bill.  

Here's an example of Bill's leadership with the Boy Scouts.  He's not doing the work for the boys - he's letting them do it and learn from their mistakes.  He was a great Scout leader.

Bill knew how to relax and just let things flow.  I've never seen him get upset.

Bill was a fixture in BSA Troop 435.  He had been with the troop, I believe, some 20 years before I passed through.  He taught literally 1000's of young men how to cope with the outdoors and be confident and comfortable with their learned skills.  He was really in his element when camping.  That is how I will always remember him.

I'd love some of Bill's outdoor cooking about now.   He'd always surprise us with some cobbler later on in the evening right before time to turn in.  I really loved camping with him.  We took a group of Boy Scouts to West Virginia one week and managed to visit Gettysburg, Monticello, Washington DC, Dolly Sods and a rapid rafting adventure down the Gauley River after a big rain.  My son and I will never forget that trip!
