

Hazel Wilkerson, 94 of Rose Hill Retirement Center, Marion, NC, died Sunday January 2, 2011. She was preceded in death by her late husband of 49 years, Horace Wilkerson. Born in Fallston, NC, Hazel was the sixth child of the late Robert and Bertha Wilson. A graduate of Appalachian State Teachers’ College in Boone, Hazel taught the third grade in Marion public schools for thirty two years. She was also the librarian for Marion Elementary School. An active member of the First Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School classes to children and adults and sang in the choir. She is survived by two daughters; Nell Chesley, and her husband Everett Chesley of Richmond, VA and Mary Sutton of Marion. Hazel was blessed with five grand children; Maria Chesley Fisk and husband Dave of Santa Barbara, CA, Sara Chesley Kamencik and husband Don of Richmond, VA, Steve Chesley and wife Jana of Atlanta, GA, Nancy Sutton of Marion and Wendy Sutton of Marion. Hazel is survived by eight great grandchildren: Megan Sutton Long, Noah Kamecik, Ryan Fisk, Katy Long, Chase Kamencik, Jason Long, Alex Fisk, and Ella Kamencik. Hazel is also survived by Rosie Wilson Hampton of Rome, GA and Ruth Wilkerson Sigmon of Lake Lure, NC and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the First Baptist Church in Marion. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at First Baptist Church, Marion. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Marion. Memorials may be made to the building fund of Marion’s First Baptist Church.
