John William “Bill” McGlasson III, 73, a resident of Marlin, Texas, passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2011. Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m., Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Waco, Texas. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at the funeral home.
John was born April 29, 1938 in Waco, Texas to John and Martha McGlasson. John graduated from Waco High School in 1956, from Baylor University (BA-1976), and Our Lady of the Lake University (Master of Social Work-1978). John served in the United States Air Force in Vietnam and the Phillippines. John retired from the Veterans Administration after 25 years of dedicated service as a social worker (23 years at the Marlin VA Hospital). After retirement John was employed by Daniel Jarvis Home Healthcare as a social worker. John was one of the first baseball players (pitcher) in the Waco Little League. John earned his commercial pilot’s license and flew the Baylor cheerleaders on several occasions to away games. John also was an official in the Southwest Umpire Association (SWOA), officiating football and basketball games primarily at the high school level. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Marlin and was active in many activities including the church choir, adult Sunday school and several church committees (including finance committee).
John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George McGlasson; and brother-in-law, Dale Flemming.
Survivors include his sisters, Martha Ann McHenry and husband, Albert, of Lewisville, Texas, and Virginia Flemming of Merritt Island, Florida; brothers, Robert “Bob” McGlasson and wife, Gloria, of Austin, Texas, and Lawrence McGlasson of San Antonio, Texas; special friend, June Smith of Marlin, Texas; 5 nieces, 4 nephews, 11 great nieces and 13 great nephews.
Pallbearers will be Mark Smith, John Cruse, Bud Holcombe, Rogers Craig, Eric Moore, and Tommy Pleasant.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Hughes Torgerson Sunday School Class.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Marlin, Marlin Public Library, or the charity of your choice.
